Do you think the Garrus and Tali romances were just fan service?

Tali and Garrus have the best romances in the game.
If I'm playing a game about galaxy and alien races a romance a with Quarian/Turian only helps immersion and role playing (besides Tali/Garrus are the best characters in the game )
Personally I don't see the point in human LIs (or kinky sex scenes), there are alredy girlfriends, clubs, Bit***s,, etc for that in real life, why would I want them in a game?

I think Garrus was. I don't think Tali mostly was.

Fan-service or not, both Tali and Garrus's romances were better done than the ones that were in ME1, or, heck, 99.98% of ANY video game out there.

Garrus's romance was awkward, funny, and yet surprisingly tragic, while Tali's felt like a continuation of her character from ME1, like a space-age fairy tale. I thought both were well done.

If you want to talk "fan-service" though, Miranda's "forward thrusters" and "rear cargo bay" probably cater to that more so than Tali or Garrus ever did.

Completely agree.

I'm speaking totally out of my ass here so please anyone feel free to ignore what I say but:

ME1, I felt the Liara romance had potential but as it is, she essentially meets you and falls completely and totally in love with you after one short conversation. It was totally done wrong and by actually using a good portion of her dialogue as a codex it undermines the supposed spiritual connection.

I don't have anything against the character and I like what's there but there was nothing for me to really latch onto aside from the fact that she was blue.

I felt Ash had a bit more chemistry with Shep but it always felt like I had to drag her uphill against her own nature. I was more than a little dissapointed that the only way to change her mind about aliens is to make a plea towards her faith in God. Very manipulative.

Now if Tali HAD  been romancable in 1 with the content she had, she'd fall into the Liara pitfall but I felt that in ME2 they totally focused on her characterization building on the good bits that were already there and that propelled the relationship forward.

Same with Garrus.

Love at first sight does happen.  I've had it happen, known some others who did, including a couple who got married, have been for over 10 years, and are very happy.  Liara is love at first sight.

Erm... I don't think I quite get you.

Are you trying to say that the whole point of the game is to please its fans? ('fan service' being the whole point of entertainment ;))

Or are you saying 'bah, it was all fan service'?

Well they could make a game with characters dry and frigid as the girl at the checkout you flirt with and storytelling copied from Crime and Punishment. Or they could make ME2. Since having Tali as a LI was an option in the start with, why not. If they managed to satisfy bunch of fans wanting to make sweet love to a quarian, even better. Garrus is a little tougher question, but once again, why not? The fact that it annoys people that have strong urges to "draw lines" everywhere justifies it in itself.

I wouldn't say she 'suddenly' falls in love with him. Starting with ME1, 2 years to reflect, and then through the events in ME2 (especially if you manage to keep her from being exiled). Her and Garrus have both been through a LOT with Shepard, so I don't see them shallow. If anything, they make more sense than the Jacob/Thane/Miranda romances, IMO.

Tali's romance seems VERY organic.  It flows and it is beautiful when she tells him that she has watched him for so long.  That makes it more touching.  (If one is to romance Tali, do her the favor of being free and clear of other romances)

Garrus...he's just cool.  His is a bit awkward, but that could be due to the rather extreme physiological differences.

Why a Paragon Femshep would EVER go with Thane is beyond reasoning to me.  He's a murderer.  I think he's cool, I do.  I don't like his look, but he does have a certain Je ne sais quoi; that does not mean I think he is a good romance option for a Paragon femshep.

Jacob is all right...but it seems stale to me.

Jack...ick.  Too checkered a past for a Paragon Shepard.

Miranda...hussie

Fidelity is another matter.  I agree that the LIs from ME1 were given weak roles in ME2 and they were too antagonistic to Shepard, but that does not mean Shepard should 'cheat' unless the relationship is definitively over.

So no, they aren't compatible sexually

They are. Mordin even gives you hints, tips and lotions to help with your romancing of Tali/Garrus.

If you're talking about procreation/conceiving, then yeah, they're not compatible, but sex is just a mechanism, and according to Mordin in-game, it's possible.

KAinrycKarr is neglecting to mention that Quarian and human DNA is based on completely different chemicals. They are genetically incompatible, but that doesn't mean that there can't be a LI.  Hell, if you go to the bar on Illium the asari matriarch bartender tells you not to eat the quarian/turian food, because it isn't compatible with humans(quarians and turians are based on the same dextro-amino acid dna and are thus much more compatible).  So no, they aren't compatible sexually, but that makes the relationship that much more powerful because instead of it being based on a drive for sex (ahem, Miranda) it is based on compatible personalities, which in my mind is much more realistic.

Just my 2 cents though.

Yes, yes they are. Are they able to have children? No. And there are certain sexual acts that Mordin *ahems* about to avoid cus of the risk of analphlatric shock. But aside from that, they are capable of sex for pleasure, sure.

If thats 'far fetected', then you should have had a problem the instant it was clear most of the aliens where biped humanoids, including all of the Council.

I agree they were put in the game to please fans. Those that state Tali was at one time a LI in ME1 need to show some proof, because I never saw it (tho I will admit she always had attractive curves and an intersting voice).

The raw data in your saved game labels each character in a way that "describes" it rather than says the name. Like "Leader, Convict, Assassin,etc..." but Tali and Garrus are labaled with their name so it probably wasn't part of the original plan to involve anyone from the first game.

Definitely fan service.

I just wish they did the Tali romance better, because in ME2, Tali's character pretty much takes a dump on the entire "Your choices have consequences!" aspect that bioware keeps hyping up.

And I wished that Garrus romance didn't have to shut him up completely for Male Shepard.

I'd like my paragon shepard to be able to get Garrus back to the happy guy that just wanted to do something exciting, and not c-sec. Not this angry renegade-lite garrus.

They are fanservice in the sense that they're only there because fans wanted them.

I don't think that makes them any less well-written, though. Do you really think BioWare's writers would half-ass something just because? I personally think they're the best in the game, especially because they both have a history with Shepard already.

Damn you Bioware, how dare you do what the fans want? O.o

The Tali romance is IMHO by far the best written in the game. The real question would probably be, why Shep didn't made a move on her in ME1 and not, why she didn't show any feelings for him in ME1. ;)

Indeedie. And who said it was an instant thing? People can grow feelings for someone over time. I would imagine this is more so when they see repeated acts of heroism and/or adventuring from that person. I mean, he all but beat a Reaper to death with his hands, heh.

Her romance plot is good but nothing compared to Jack's.

Hell yeah it was fan service. Nothing wrong with giving the people want they want. I thought their romances were great.

Would have liked to have had more actual conversations with Garrus though.

Not neglecting to mention anything. They are closet to human; this allows for physical compatibility, as in, the car in the garage...

That doesn't mean they are genetically compatible, hence the need for immuno-boosters and whatnot.

It is not based on sex, but it does include sex. Mordin even comments on it, and provides recommendations.

The fact that sex is such a serious implication in the relationship, I think, makes the whole that much juicier.

The conclusion of the romance with Jack is great, but I don't think it would be likely, that a paragon Shep would fall in love with her or she in love with Shep.

He is a former assassin who allowed himself to be used as a weapon because that was what he was trained for since age six.  But he knows that he led a sinful life, that his path caused him to lose the things he cared about, and wants to try and correct the mistakes he made.  He is a spiritual and thoughtful character, and not murderous in the least.  I can easily see why a Paragon FemShep might romance him, as long as she can look past the extremely superficial veneer of his past exploits.

You're saying that a Paragon would have no interest in trying to help someone who is steeped in anger and incapable of forming close relationships due to suffering horrendous abuse as a child?  I don't know, seems like the sort of thing a kind, patient person might try.  Who knows, they might even grow close to them as a result...

Tali's romance was fantastic. The best part is how it's built on ME 1, she mentions how you saved the people of Feros and watched you face when Ash/Kaiden died... it was a remarkable detail in the converation that really made a powerful statement.. Certainly about a hundred times better than Miranda's "i'm not a daughter I'm a dynasty I'm engineered to be perfect" crap.
