This is a source of confusion for me and the game gives conflicting evidence on this.  On one hand we assume the collectors were so radically modified at the genetic level that they have almost no resemblance to the original Protheans that ruled the galaxy 50 thousand years ago.
There is some evidence to support this.  The silhoette images of Protheans we see in the original beacon image show Protheans that appear to have tentacles coming out of their faces which would match the Prothean statues on Illos.

On the other hand we see another beacon in Mass Effect 2 that shows the same image as well as an image of collectors which is much easier to make out.

So what do you guys think?  Do you think the Protheans and Collectors looked the same?

I'm almost sure there was a picture of a Prothean in the Codex entry for them in ME2. They look Huskish.

(On a side note: Why does no one read the Codex?)

At the end of the game it's explained that Reaper's look like the organic species it assimilates (thus the end game boss of a giant human robot). We know the last species to be taken by the Reaper's where Protehans. So why does Sovereign look like a squid? Shouldn't he look like a giant robot Prothean?

EDI speculated in the game that the attempt to build a prothean reaper failed.

Uh... no. For one, did you pay attention to ME1's story clearly at all? Sovereign's been around, far longer than the Protheans. Second, it's pretty clear seeing as the Human-Reaper fetus wasn't even close to as big as Sovereign is, and looking at the ending sequence of ME2 and how Reapers generally share the same appearance, it's easy to assume that these species-modelled Reapers simply serve as the core of the ship, nothing more.

I know what you mean. On one hand, we're led to believe that the Protheans looked like the statues on Ilos or the images in the ME1 vision. So you can assume that the Collector appearance comes from after the Reapers harvested most of them.

Then in ME2, the Archeological Dig Site side-quest has a slightly modified version of the prothean vision where the protheans look like Collectors (pause at 5:44 in the video).

The only explanation I can think of is the new vision in ME2 shows a warning to other protheans that the Reapers are changing them... or something like that. I don't know. That idea is really stretching it; all we can do right now is wait for ME3.

These plot holes are the result of firing the braintrust that put ME on the map and replacing him with slightly retarded interns (free labor + tax write off).

I hardly consider it a plothole, considering it was put in so deliberately.
Loose ends =/= plotholes.

Unfortunately, you cannot trust a wiki.

The information on that page is incorrect.  The genetic similarity between the Collectors and the Protheans was not "only one strand of their DNA".

I should probably edit that wiki page, but I'm kind of lazy, so...

in me3 you get a prothean as a sqaud member it shows a pic of a collector in in old but advanced armor mabye this one got away when it was getting changed and stayed on a cryo storage or mabye they can live for a very long time what about the prothans from me1 that was let go what happend tp them they could of studyd the humans as that explains the weird globe from that random planet it is very confusing but i think that the protheans worshiped a older race and tht was from the tentacle thing that was on ilos

I don't get what we're suposed to think about Prothean appearance now, ME1 and 2 had the squid faces, and statues to confirm, now in ME3 we have protheans looking collector-esque, yet in the codex is shows squid face with reaper implant lookalikes

Look like collectors but greenish when you see husk protheans in a flashback though you can see how they look liked in their transition to collectors
