 What weapon are you guys using for alistar's main hand? right now I am using vangaurd (mace from branka) but i feel like thats not right.

That's not wrong either. I guess it depends on what you need him more for. I like him with that mace.
On a switch I have him use the single-hand weapon with the most slots I can find, and socket magic resist runes.

I have him in whatever is the highest I can find along the way, then after finishing RTO I have him in Cailan's full gear with Maric's sword.

This go-round I'm trying Starfang out as a 2Hander on Sten.

He usually gets Topsider's Honor with me, or Asturian's Might, but I don't have RtO yet either.

If you're pumping DEX on the PC version, then a dagger is the way to go. Here's the 'on-screen' numbers from a Lvl 24 s/s warrior w/ 42 STR and 85 DEX...

w/ Starfang: 54.2

w/ Rose Thorn: 70.7 --> 30% gain

What about pumping DEX on the console version?

Not positive, but I think consoles still have a dex bug. I don't really keep track of console specific data.

Last playthrough I had Alistair as a dual wield warrior with duncans sword from the Ostagar DLC.

Starfang or Keening whichever I have on hand. I have never figured out how to get Asturian's blade or Topsiders. curious to see what they are though.

I start him with Oathkeeper, then go to Topsider's Honor. I was using that for him right through endgame until RtO. On my last playthrough, I gave him Maric's sword at Ostagar and the King's Armor after Landsmeet. I'm not fond of the style of Maric's sword, but it's right for him to be using it from a roleplaying point of view. One of these days, I'm going to mod a replacement that's more traditional. I don't use Starfang at all. I don't like the way it looks and find it overpowered.

Topsider's Honour here too. For shield Branka's one is nice until you can get Howe's or Duncan's in Denerim. Although I admit that I did use a mod to change the name from Branka's shield to " Last Night's Pizza " which felt more appropriate, given his lack of culinary prowess.
