SOLUTION FOUND.

Okay, this is how you CHANGE THE HEADS of YOUR COMPANIONS.

1. Create the Morph.

2. Name it as follows:

For Leliana: genfl_leliana

For Morrigan: genfl_morrigan

For Zevran: genfl_zevran

etc.

I.e. genfl_charactername

3. Post to Local.

4. Find your *.mor file. If you've made it from a custom module, it should be in Documents\\\\BioWare\\\\Dragon Age\\\\Add-Ins\\\\(module number)\\\\core\\\\override\\\\toolset export. If you can't find it, just use search until you do.

5. Verify that the file now has the appropriate prefix (i.e. hf_genfl_leliana, hm_genfl_zevran etc).

6. Put the *.mor file in Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\packages\\core\\override\\toolsetexport, which is the CORRECT location for it to be used INSTEAD of the character's default head.

7. If you created the morph from Single Player, which you shouldnt be doing (use custom module instead), remove the Single Player folder your toolset has created in your Documents location.

VOILA! Your favourite companion now has a head that you designed!

Here's my new Leliana:

I think the problem with the out of memory issue is if the .das file is too big the toolset editor won't open it. I know it'll open my Orazammar save which is abut 7.5 megs, but if it tries to open my Arl of Denerim save, which is JUST over 10 megs, it gives me an Out of Memory error. More than likely it's allocated a set amount of space to hold the entire file in memory and the moment your file exceeds the space allocated for it it just blows up.

That's the only thing I can think of -_-.

Malcroix, thank you for your efforts and your reports. I'm going to try this out as soon as I get the toolset downloaded.

Good work Mal, it's very helpful and works so far.

In the screen shot with your new Lil though, how did you get that color hair and armor? I can't alter armor colors very much and if I don't use a default hair tint, it generally goes ultrabright with a few streaks of teal or purple or whatever I used. Are those custom tints?

If you use the wrong kind of tint the colors get all funky.... you need T3 tints for hair and T1 tints for eyebrows. You can make custom tints and put em in the override folder and the toolset will show em with the others if properly named.

Awesome. Is there a tutorial on how to make custom tints anywhere? I've looked in the tutorial, but I didn't see anything there or on the wiki. I could have missed it though.

Ahhh, can't wait for some armor colors besides rust, gray, and silver.

SAME METHOD CAN BE USED TO CHANGE APPEARANCE OF EXISTING ITEMS.

1. In the toolset, edit the target item or create a new item.

2. Export the new item (*.uti file). Choose the simplest export (without resources) if you don't use any custom models/textures.

3. Note the name of the target item (template resref).

4. Exit the toolset.

5. Find and manually rename your custom item to match the name of the target item. Make sure this file is in the same toolsetexport folder as your custom heads.

VOILA - in the game, the target item will change its appearance.

This is easy to do with 99% of game items as they will be in the toolset database.

Promotion items are a different matter, though, as they don't seem to be in the database. Presumably, you'll have to manually open the relevant DAZIP file to look at the item's name so that it can be overriden. I'll try this later with Blood Dragon helmet - I love the armor and the set bonus, but hate the helmet's fugly appearance and the fact that it hides the face of my character, which I've spent so much effort on.

Malcroix you are a god. my new player character head is working and so is my game. FINALLY!

here are the steps i took to get it to work (your initial instructions weren't working for me, but a combo did in the end):

1. create morph, save as "filename.mrh" (obviously whatever filename you want to use for the .mrh file).

2. Tools>export to local

3. minimise toolset

4. rename the .mrh file from filename.mrh to em_filename.mrh (or hm_filename.mrh, or whatever prefix is appropriate to your character).

5. retrieve .mor file (filename.mor) from mydocs\\bioware\\dragon age\\packages\\core\\override\\toolsetexport

6. copy both the em_filename.mrh and the filename.mor files to your main DA directory/modules/single player/override

7. bring the toolset back up

8. tools>empty export directories

9. open the savegame you want to use. located in mydocs\\bioware\\dragon age\\characters\\CHARACTER NAME\\saves\\SAVE SLOT_XX (it will be a .das file)

10. in the opened save game, navigate to savegame_playerchar>savegame_playerchar_char>savegame_appearance

11. change the savegame_appearance_morph_name value from *empty* to em_filename (or hm_filename or whatever appropriate prefix you used). leave out the .mor or .mrh extension bit.

12. save the edited savegame

13. exit the toolset.

14. open up the mydocs\\bioware\\dragon age\\modules folder

15. delete or rename the "single player" folder

16. play dragon age.

i did this with the steam version and it worked for me. new player character head and my party ai still functions. no broken game. it remains to be seen if steam sees the two extra files and removes them, but i've saved them elsewhere so it won't be a big deal if that happens, i can just copy them across again (the .mrh and .mor files that went in the main DA override folder). i've launched it twice successfully so far.

Thanks. Glad to be of service to the community.

I don't think I altered this particular armor - it's a regular chainmail, steel I think. Ditto hair - one of the black colors.

I made the head morph in the toolset, so there were more options than in the character creator.

You can definitely change the tint of armor in the toolset if you make custom items like I described above. But only very few tints actually seem to work in the toolset by default - e.g. I could use the "Blue" tint on an armor to get a bluish color, but all the other preset tints didn't seem to be doing anything. Maybe creating a custom tint could work, like suggested above.

Is it possible to create a tiefling style character with this toolset?

Also are there any editors for single player games out there on there own? Sort of like the editors for Baldurs Gate? Like Shadowkeeper?

Yeah (sans horns, though). Wait till I get home, I'll post my pic of the new Zevran, very tiefling-looking.

LOL not ATM.

Anyway, the Toolset's good for nearly all my needs right now. And it's MUCH better than Shadowkeeper on a number of levels.

Oh, I see now. Going in and looking at the medium armors, regular chainmail is that color. It had always looked brown and silver before, but it colored out as it went. Very nice, I was beginning to think there wasn't much variety in appearance. A pity I can't get massive armor to keep the color when I change the material type to something like leather or a robe.

I have made two morphs based on your posts now, seems to be in order. The black hair looked more like a dark purple on my screen, so I had thought you'd used a custom tint, but it is the standard, so that's nice. Only thing I can't seem to figure out is the....erm, splotchy effect your Malcroix Morph seems to have on the face and neck. It looks like the same effect as a certain demon posessed child and warden had. I didn't find it myself though.

The toolset does kick the ingame generator's ass though on customization. Now to just master it, and correct the facial wreck of Zevran. *shudder*

Has anyone tried to edit NPCs? It'd be amusing to change up Logain and such.

Heh heh, that's the secret ingredient 8=)

It's actually a skin texture. The one called "infected" 8=)

Yeah, that saccharine eurotrash was practically begging for some "facial reconstruction surgery". I took Victor Hugo's Guinplen and Heath Ledger's Joker as an inspiration for this malicious trickster:

Nasty bugger, ain't he? All those years livin in a brothel sure left their mark. But I've got to say, this face goes perfectly with his voice and suave but dangerous personality, suddenly making him an interesting character instead of a gay porno icon.

It's basically the same as editing your partymembers.

But I don't find it fun as I enjoy BioWare's work in providing us with the world and the characters. What I like is to edit my own party to my preferences.

This thread helped me make the best looking Dalish Elf I could. Didn't like the premade morphs very much at all.

Thanks all, especially Malcroix. :)

I'm making these available here , I think just dropping the mor files in the proper directory is all that's needed right?

Question: Is there a way to morph a character that you are currently playing? As in load up the template you already have, instead of starting from scratch? I have a character that somehow has this "dent" in his face when you look at him from behind. I probably made the cheekbones stick out too much...

Anyways, I like his face overall, but just want to change this little annoyance.

So.. would anyone be willing, if I posted my current save game file and another save game file with how I WANT my character to really look (Just Female Elf to Female Elf), could you repost the corrected save file back? I'd do anything so I don't have to mess with all these steps.

Hmm... How are people managing to put Morrigan's eye color on their characters? Does anyone know?

A side note: Thanks very much to Malcroix and others for all the help and info. It's very much appreciated! =] <3
