I'm sure a lot of people here would agree with me that Mass Effect is greater than Avatar.  Things I love about the Mass Effect universe make me hate Avatar's design more and more.

I won't write you an essay, but I just want to make a couple points:
  • The level of detail that went into creating interesting unique races in ME is astounding.  All Avatar did was just go, "Uhhh.  Let's just make 'em big blue Native Americans."
  • The universe design is better.  I had a stronger reaction to seeing Omega for the first time than I did seeing Avatar's bioluminescent forest.
  • As far as hot blue chicks go, I'll take an asari over a na'vi any day.  Yeah, I know they're a monosexual race, but they don't have the creepy 'furry' thing going on.
One thing I'm so happy Mass Effect is not guilty of doing is creating a race of creatures based off human racial/cultural sterotypes; look at the Ferengi or the Toydarians in Star Trek and Star Wars to see what I mean.  All the aliens in ME have their own personalities, not just one personality template.

Thoughts?  Comments?  Cries of anguish?

I agree with you on everything.

District 9 is also better than Avatar...but comparing District 9 to Mass Effect is apples and oranges.

Personally I prefer ME to Avatar because ME doesn't try to shove its moral ideals in your face with all the subtlety of a pie to the face.

You shove your morals into MEs face.

I wouldn't compare Avatar to ME. But I liked Avatar just fine.

And that big blue chick grew on me. I guess it was a long enough movie that I was able to appreciate her. :P

I think it'd be cool to live in a glow in the dark forest too. :P

What an odd comparison.

I can appreciate both for what they are. Avatar isn't designed to tell the greatest story ever, it is meant to be a cinematic experience, at least in my opinion.

But its fine to compare Avatar and ME is not apples to oranges?

Hey like or dislike what you want but at least attempt to stick to your own standards.

"Mass Effect 2 is the Avatar of video games... ...but better written."

~TIME

And I share that sentiment, entirely.

Well, this comparison is more valid than one would think. Avatar is a film. Mass Effect is little more than an interactive film.

However, Avatar is a technological breakthrough, while Mass Effect uses common (and possibly outdated) technology. As for the morals, I respect Cameron for taking a stance, and even more so for being able to convince the opponents of his ideas or at least make them think about his message (granted, this has more to do with the sheer power of his imagery than with the cogency of his reasoning, but still). Mass Effect, on the other hand, uses a trick unavailable to film directors - multiple choices. So, not much to say here - its choices are supposed to please everyone - from a knight in shining armor to a complete bastard.

Okay right, wanting to have sex with an alien is sooooo different.

This comparison is so weak. It's like comparing an AAA+ novel to an AAA+ movie... A sketch to a 3d model.

Different tools, different methods, need I go on?

i actually thought of Mass Effect when people were RAVING about Avatar's special effects. I was completely unimpressed with Avatar simply because i thought "this is nothing i haven't seen before in like, dozens of sci-fi video games that i've played over the years."

Avatar seems just a little too generic to me, while Mass Effect is fresh from a game perspective(never had a game use character development to drive the plot forwards before.)

EDIT: Grrr my link isn't showing up as an image :pinched:

From a technological perspective I haven't seen anything in Avatar that Lucas didn't do in the prequels years ago (and look what great movies those were :crying:).

I honestly don't think Cameron has made a good movie since Aliens, and even that wasn't some brilliant film, more of the ultimate sci-fi, space marine, action movie.

Sitting here listening to him compare Avatar to 2001 on Charlie Rose is about to make me puke.

Anywho, it's a hard comparison to make, but if I had to pick one or the other I'd take ME (or District 9) over Avatar any day.  Aliens vs. ME would be a much closer competition.

I dont know where you're coming from, unless you are comparing Mass Effect 2 to the Avatar video game. Seriously, one is a movie, one is a video game.

Try to condense Mass Effect 2 into a 2.5 hour movie and beleive me, Avatar will come out on top because despite everything--Avatar has a better main plot. I mean, seriously, can you really see a movie about bugs and a giant human robot as being that great a movie? (hint: I think we have plenty of movies like that already). True Mass Effect 2 has much better character development and side-story that most movies and games, but it also takes many many hours to show that to the player, where a movie has to do it in a limited amount of time.

Mass Effect 1 would work as a much better standalone movie because the plot is just more unique and better paced. Even that--I dont think it would be at the same level of beleivablily to the audience as Avatar.

This is a stupid comparison
