I was doing pretty darn well up til Horizon. That last gauntlet part, especially the last fight had me all kinds of dead. A lot. Does it go back to being a -little- easier? Is Horizon something of a mid-endboss? I only ask cause on Normal it's a completely different story.

I'm only up to the Reaper IFF part, but horizon is as hard as it gets. Everything after that is kinda easy imo.

Whoa, I can't even get past Freedom's Progress, seriously. What class were you using?

Everyone says that Infiltrator is the hardest for Insanity, but imo it seems the best opinion. So far I've only died a few times, and with cloaking, incinerate and greater range plus tungsten rounds on a level 30 character...I'm yet to get to Horizon though.

I am dreading it.

I Think Horizon is one of the funnest levels to play. I love the last part with all the guys. I play adept and average gatsby really helped me hone my skills as a kick *** adept player. After watching his vids on adepting through insanity on youtube horizon is no longer a headache but a fun place to really exercise the use of squad placement, biotic combos, and light gun play to help make sing + warp bombs just devastate everything. Its great =)

I'm playing a sentinel. I chose Reave as my extra ability and maxed it out. It's pretty damn helpful. At this point I have my tech armor maxed out as well. (Obviously very helpful as well). This is my second playthrough, therefore I get all the nice xp bonuses and I imported a lvl 60 char...so that helps. A lot. Thanks, Funkybyte. Glad to hear it returns to being a bit less stressful. Yeah. I actually died on the first mission (literally first mission). I was a bit intimidated. Then: I didn't die through Mordin's, Garrus' or Jack's mission. I did take a few too many rockets to the face in Grunt's recruitment mission though and died. Then Horizon hit...and well it got a lot more difficult...the last part anyway. Ouch.

Horizon is pretty brutal for some classes before they are fully fleshed out, especially if you didn't focus on a build that would specifically do well here.  Yes, it does get easier after that.  That's probably one of the hardest, if not hardest fights in the game for the level you generally do it.

I know "damage over time" abilities do all of their damage at once on protections, but does Reave do more total damage than Warp (when frontloaded) and the only reason to use Warp then would be for the explosion?  I picked up AP ammo as my bonus since I already had Warp anyway.

Horizon wasn't too bad. The Collector ship was the hardest imo.

I just did Horizon with an Infiltrator and it was a surprise, yet tons of fun. Very tough compared to the other missions so far. Don't remember it being as hard on my Vanguard, hence the surprise. Just wait for the Collector ship though... ugh.

Horizon is the hardest for me. I have played Insanity on Adept, Infiltrator and Vanguard and now a Solider. Was alot easier as a Infiltrator but WAY fun as a Vanguard.

As an Adept I had Garrus and Grunt in my squad. Grunt just tears up any husk he sees and I like having Garrus for his sniper.

As a Infiltrator I had Jack for Shockwave and Shotgun since shes a crazy B***h and Zaeed. This was my second playthrough so I had Warp Ammo really really useful on the Collector's

On my Vanguard I had Armor Piercing Ammo and Miranda had Heavy Warp and Grunt also.

Whenever you know your abou to fight Husk on any mission it's nice to have Grunt he just rams through everybody and is hard to stop after all he is a Krogan.

The hardest part for me was the wave of Collector right before the Praetorian. The Praetorian just requires alot of space and weapon juggling and having Warp Ammo helps awhole lot because its effective against Barriers, Armor and health.

I think the main advantage of Reave for non-protection damage is two-fold: 1.) It's instantaneous just like Overload. and 2.) For most organics, they just sit there and convulse as they take the damage over time, giving you and your squad a nice opportunity to finish them off, without them firing back. That's my two cents on it.

Edit: As for damage, I think it's pretty comparable to Warp. Warp might do slightly more damage. (Not including the explosion)

I have gotten pretty used to Horizon on the 360 but for some reason I can't adapt to the PC controls.

I've been powering through a Stage-Director Engineer for the past few hours and Horizon is impossible on the PC with my current build. But it's fun. Always fun...

Horizon was most fun with a vanguard, as with so much space and so many husks and collectors it was just too easy to bounce from place to place. the Praetorian was nowhere near as annoying as the one to follow on the collector ship, thought at least there I had my trusty Vindicator. As others have also said, having the right build makes all the difference for Horizon. The rest of the game could be comparatively easy, just because by the time the dificulty picks up again you'll have all your upgrades nearly.

Infiltrator or soldier is probably the BEST going through insanity actually. Its the other classes that may have problems.

Horizon actually sold me on Area Reave, mainly the part where you're up against 2 Scions and a horde of husks rushing towards you. It was THE place where I started finding that Warp Explosion was just much too darn slow against melee rushers, and thus I wanted an AoE attack that affected armor/barrier that did NOT need any kind of setup. I ended up having to resort to heavy weapons to burst down one of the scions down so that you have one less ranged enemy to worry about before you start kiting the husks to death.

The rest was relatively easy, as its the normal strategy of take cover in a tactically well defended spot, and retreat if necessary. For the record, on the far left during the 'tower' portion of Horizon is a place with two ramps and a fence you can take cover from. It helps somewhat against the 2 Scions portion before you get swarmed and need to start running, but its extremely useful during the Harbringer portion since not one of them tries to actually go up the ramp. Kinda useless against the Praetorian enemy since he hovers while the fence is too low to offer protection, but then again the Praetorian was the easiest part of Horizon since you can just run circles on tall cover while you whittle him down to death.

I did it with an Adept on Insanity and yes, the Husk rush +Scions is brutal. The collectors and praetorian after that is a breeze. Scions completely kill you. The trick with them is to stay behind high cover and they don't shoot you without line of sight behind that.
Husks are just a problem because or their armor, easy to strip with a heavy pistol. Their health is quite weak compared to other enemies.

Alternatively you can make the whole thing a bit easier by not fighting the Scions + Husks. Just open the door but don't cross it, and snipe the Scions with your guns/biotics/techs, you can see parts of them sticking out from behind the tower. It will then just skip to the next sequence where you have to activate the tower.

That won't stop Harbinger from spamming his biotic attacks later, though x_x
The Praetorian was actually fun: there's some cover made of a... car, I think? near the door, it's high enough so the Praetorian won't be able to laser-beam you to death, you can just circle around it forever and unload your gun/spam your biotics/techs on it.

Yes, I like cheap tactics :P

About your other question, yes it gets easier after that. Kind of. Except for the Collector ship: be prepared to have the Reload screen burnt into your retinas.

I absolutely love doing Horizon as a Vanguard on insanity.

It seems like insanity on New Game+ is much harder though, and I haven't got to Horizon on that character yet.

The end of Horizon is by far the worst part on Insane. By far.

Horizon was also tough for me playing NG+ Insanity/Soldier. I learned a lot though that helped me later in the game.

Yeah, Horizon is a pain in the butt on Insanity. I died lots of times on that final fight. I think the only time I ended dying nearly as many times was against the Geth Colossus on Tali's recruitment mission.

If you want to be "cheap", just use the M-Cain, if you have acquired it through research before going to Horizon, for the first part of that final fight with all the husks and Harbingers. Then you only actually have to fight against the Praetorian. If you have the M-Cain it will be automatically replaced with that particle beam you pick up, but you get a chance to switch back to the M-Cain in the room where you talk to that engineer who is hiding himself.

Same here, but they are pretty close. Of course, I'm only as far as the beginning of the Derelict Reaper, so I might hit a similar hair-pulling spot.
