I was doing pretty darn well up til Horizon. That last gauntlet part, especially the last fight had me all kinds of dead. A lot. Does it go back to being a -little- easier? Is Horizon something of a mid-endboss? I only ask cause on Normal it's a completely different story.
Horizon is pretty brutal for some classes before they are fully fleshed out, especially if you didn't focus on a build that would specifically do well here. Yes, it does get easier after that. That's probably one of the hardest, if not hardest fights in the game for the level you generally do it.
I'm playing a sentinel. I chose Reave as my extra ability and maxed it out. It's pretty damn helpful.
I know "damage over time" abilities do all of their damage at once on protections, but does Reave do more total damage than Warp (when frontloaded) and the only reason to use Warp then would be for the explosion? I picked up AP ammo as my bonus since I already had Warp anyway.

As an Adept I had Garrus and Grunt in my squad. Grunt just tears up any husk he sees and I like having Garrus for his sniper.
As a Infiltrator I had Jack for Shockwave and Shotgun since shes a crazy B***h and Zaeed. This was my second playthrough so I had Warp Ammo really really useful on the Collector's
On my Vanguard I had Armor Piercing Ammo and Miranda had Heavy Warp and Grunt also.
Whenever you know your abou to fight Husk on any mission it's nice to have Grunt he just rams through everybody and is hard to stop after all he is a Krogan.
The hardest part for me was the wave of Collector right before the Praetorian. The Praetorian just requires alot of space and weapon juggling and having Warp Ammo helps awhole lot because its effective against Barriers, Armor and health.

I think the main advantage of Reave for non-protection damage is two-fold: 1.) It's instantaneous just like Overload. and 2.) For most organics, they just sit there and convulse as they take the damage over time, giving you and your squad a nice opportunity to finish them off, without them firing back. That's my two cents on it.
Edit: As for damage, I think it's pretty comparable to Warp. Warp might do slightly more damage. (Not including the explosion)

I've been powering through a Stage-Director Engineer for the past few hours and Horizon is impossible on the PC with my current build. But it's fun. Always fun...

The rest was relatively easy, as its the normal strategy of take cover in a tactically well defended spot, and retreat if necessary. For the record, on the far left during the 'tower' portion of Horizon is a place with two ramps and a fence you can take cover from. It helps somewhat against the 2 Scions portion before you get swarmed and need to start running, but its extremely useful during the Harbringer portion since not one of them tries to actually go up the ramp. Kinda useless against the Praetorian enemy since he hovers while the fence is too low to offer protection, but then again the Praetorian was the easiest part of Horizon since you can just run circles on tall cover while you whittle him down to death.

I did it with an Adept on Insanity and yes, the Husk rush +Scions is brutal. The collectors and praetorian after that is a breeze. Scions completely kill you. The trick with them is to stay behind high cover and they don't shoot you without line of sight behind that.
Husks are just a problem because or their armor, easy to strip with a heavy pistol. Their health is quite weak compared to other enemies.

That won't stop Harbinger from spamming his biotic attacks later, though x_x
The Praetorian was actually fun: there's some cover made of a... car, I think? near the door, it's high enough so the Praetorian won't be able to laser-beam you to death, you can just circle around it forever and unload your gun/spam your biotics/techs on it.
Yes, I like cheap tactics
About your other question, yes it gets easier after that. Kind of. Except for the Collector ship: be prepared to have the Reload screen burnt into your retinas.

It seems like insanity on New Game+ is much harder though, and I haven't got to Horizon on that character yet.

I actually thought the Collector ship was harder.
Same here, but they are pretty close. Of course, I'm only as far as the beginning of the Derelict Reaper, so I might hit a similar hair-pulling spot.
