I know Bioware made the Sonic the Hedgehog RPG, and I was just curious if there was any chance Sega and Bioware would work together again in the future. Bioware has made my favorite WRPGs, Sega is responsible for my favorite JRPGs.

Phantasy Star was my first RPG experience. Phantasy Star 2 was great and brutally difficult, I have no idea how I managed to beat it when I was a kid, even with the guide that came with the game. The dungeon layouts were insane and even normal monster encounters could be a challenge. Skipping over Phantasy Star 3, Phantasy Star 4 is easily one of my favorite games of all time. The story was great, the game was still challenging (though much easier than Phantasy Stars 1 and 2) and it was a great finale to the series.

The same team responsible for Phantasy Stars 1, 2 and 4 would create another one of my favorite games of all time, Skies of Arcadia. Even with the absurdly high random encounter rate, I think it was impossible to hate that game. They also made the fantastic Valkyria Chronicles for Playstation 3. They had nothing to do with Phantasy Star 3, Phantasy Star Online or Phantasy Star Universe and it definitely shows.

I just got to thinking, since Bioware already has a couple space RPGs under their belt, I think Bioware remaking the original Phantasy Star series would be a gaming dream come true for me. I know, the odds of it happening are incredibly low, but a man can dream, right? As far as I know, the team responsible for the Phantasy Star series has pretty much left it behind them. Another team remade Phantasy Stars 1 and 2, with poor results from what I gather. The two remakes never even got an English translation. After the disaster that is Phantasy Star Universe, I really hope Sega lets a team besides Sonic Team work with the series. I haven't played a decent game brought about by Sonic Team in a very long time.

Thoughts on Sega or Phantasy Star, anyone? Thoughts on the fool's hope of Bioware being able to take on Phantasy Star? Posted Image

I'm still intrigued as to what Sonic Chronicles is actually like. It got mixed reviews. But then, Bioware likes to make story driven RPG's and the Sonic universe doesn't really have much meat on the bone. One day, I'll have to give it a go.

As for a good recent game by Sonic Team, you should check out Sonic Rush. They recaptured the essence of 2D Sonic beautifully and still managed to make an innovative Sonic game for the DS. I just wish I was better at it, it can be brutal >.<

Phantasy Star was amazing for its time. Absolutely beautiful game considering it was running on Master System hardware. Back then that level of detail was unheard of in an RPG. That monsters animated was particularly impressive. It was also unique for having a female protagonist during a time when that was still unheard of, save a for a very short list of exceptions like Samus Aran.

I thought Phantasy Star 2 was great. Tedious at times, but great. It had everything PS1 did with updated graphics and more plot.

I'm one of those rare people that enjoyed Phantasy Star III. I think it gets a rap. Yes, it was different. The graphics were bit a fugly at times, and the generation aspect of it could be annoying if you wanted to stick with one core group. It is the weakest entry and most cliche entry in the series, but I still enjoyed it. Certainly I played much worse RPGs.

Phantasy Star 4 brought back everything Phantasy Star 2 had and was ridden with so many references to past games in the series it was mind blowing. It was definitely a treat for long time fans. The story was a bit too predictable though, and I *hated* that they killed of Alys early on. I had no problem with Chad. I get that her death forced him to grow up and all that. But it burned because I was hoping for another female protagonist after two games with the standard chivalrous male hero. It was fun, but I only completed it once due to that and several other reasons. On the whole I definitely put it behind the first PS games.

As for Phantasy Star online... well... the less written about those the better. :P

I would love to see a new game in this series, but I'm not holding my breath that any western developer will get a crack at it. That wouldn't necessarily be a good thing either. Phantasy Star games have a very japanese style to them, and trying to cram that into a western RPG approach may sacrifice some of its charm. If a western developer did work on a sequel however, BioWare would be better than most.

Ahh, the elusive Phantasy Star 5. I have dreamed about a game like that but I've learned to stop dreaming. I was even going to write a design template for it in secret. It was to be grandious. A prequel to the original Phantasy Star showcasing Lassics fall into darkness over the loss of his fiance with the ending being the birth of Alys. Even thought of a name for it. Phantasy Star: Origins of Darkness.

Phantasy Star V? Never gonna happen...

I approve of the idea of Bioware making the next Phantasy Star. Anyone who says that the online versions were part of the same series never played the originals. The thoughts of Bioware making a true sequel to Phantasy Star 4 pleases me.

While I severely doubt that this will ever happen, it sounds about like the only thing that could ever save it.

I haven't played my DS much at all lately, but I was thinking about giving Sonic Rush a go. I haven't tried Sonic Chronicles either, but I really should try to pick it up eventually. However, I don't think I can ever forgive Sonic Team for Sonic 2006. Posted Image

Phantasy Star Online was entertaining, but yeah, they basically just threw in a few pointless references, like naming the last boss Dark Falz, and slapped the Phantasy Star name on it. Phantasy Star Universe should have been better, but the references to the original series were even less and the online portion has been horribly mismanaged by Sega. Instead of making new content, they would just unlock stuff that was already on the disc over the course of months. Now the PC and PS2 servers are going offline for good at the end of next month. It kind of depresses me to see how far what used to be my favorite game company has fallen.
