Expand the current game with more companions, story, land, items and so on. Also, expand the current story to continue as you progress through the expansion.

BioWare Expansion: Remove all relevant companions and have the previous story mean nothing as you progress through the expansion since it was all happening in an alternate reality. The Matrix comes to mind maybe?

Thats why the expansion is called Awakening, you awaken from the alternate reality and are back to the real world.
