So, about a dozen hours through my 4th play-through I get the bad news that I apparently have to be anti-social to avoid romantic encounters. In the past, I had always treated the matter like I would in any other game- an isolated issue. But now that I have learned that Bio is going for a true transitional trilogy- I want the girls to go away! Is it just me, or is there some backwards mentality that I have to actually work to avoid a relationship?
I've tried to remedy the problem with no luck so far:
I tell Liara, "No, Ash is just a friend. And no; I'm not interesting in you either." Doesn't work- I have the same cat-fight encounter sans the much needed fourth option, "All I was doing was participating in friendly chit-chat! Both of you go away!. *returns to earlier save*.
In addition to telling Liara to go away, I then proceed to tell Ash that "I'm sorry, I guess I was sending the wrong impressions." Ash bugs off, to her credit. Liara now comes back with a vengence, and I'm forced to tell her off at the "Grounded" locker scene, yet she still tries to have at me!
I need more ammunition, gentlemen! I'm about this far *makes tiny sign with fingers* from firing Liara out of the airlock! (If only that were an option) Is there something more I can do at the Citadel? Perhaps, if I deny her en route to Ilos, I can avoid the relationship "hold over" into ME3?
I just want to truly role-play through, this time around, and Liara refuses to acknowledge her role! Go away, woman! No means no!
Avoiding Romance- Mayday!!!

I have that same problem going on the other gender. Liara is easy to shrug off, just go with the "I don't swing that way" comment. But Kaidan's all "I got signals." And I'm all "Dude, I just talked to you. Do women not talk to you?" And I can't dissuade him without being an ass about it.
But if Liara's your problem, this is what you need to do. Pick her up last. Then she's too bat**** crazy to think about jumping you. You avoid romance with the added perk of seeing Liara bat**** crazy. Win!

Idk, I kind of sort of told Liara off and ... engineered Ashley's death on Virmire. Then got with Miranda in the next one with no strings attached.
DAO seems to have had similar issues with female characters romancing male characters and still having to "break it off" with Leliana.

A quick way to avoid the romance with Ashley is when you walk in on her talking to her sister and choose the bottom opition...Shepard should say something like "thats not professional" or something like that.

Not a very realistic aspect of the game... but I guess they want to make sure it's not. Otherwise most of us would miss the content entirely.

How do you trigger Liara v. Ashley catfight? I played through 6 times and it never happened to me...

Just keep picking the top-right (Paragon) options each time you talk to them, and say that you are interested in the other person, but are ALSO interested in them.
As for going to ME2 relationship-free, the most surefire way to do it is to tell off Liara in favour of the human LI, then leave them with the nuke on Virmire. Cruel, but it works.

Well, it didn't work. As aforementioned, I told off both of 'em and continued to shove Liara away up through the beginning of the second game, and she still wound up as a photo on my desk. Maybe it's just me, but this is a REALLY bad design flaw, (or serious delayed effect bug).
You shouldn't have to avoid entire sections of content because there are illogical strings attached, potentially impacting a game an entire sequal away. And what is worse is that the "No thanks" dialogue is there, but is completely useless leaving you with a nasty surprise after dedicating hours upon hours to developing your character.
Show stopping issues are bad, but at least they cut you off and spare you the effort. This may come across as trivial, but the most noticable of scars appear on the prettiest of faces.

I agree, although I believe the fault is probably incorrectly set variables than any mistake or poor design on Bioware's part. There's been several other instances of other decisions or actions being incorrectly carried over to ME2 (such as Conrad Verner and the Besieged Base quest). The best course of action is to notify Bioware about this, and hopefully they'll rectify these issues in an upcoming patch.
Failing that, there are people working on save game editors out there. As a last resort, one could use one of these save game editors to change the flags in your save game prior to importing it into ME2. (I know you can currently use Gibbed's save game editor to fix the Conrad issue. I haven't tried it out myself, but presumably it could also allow you to adjust your romance flags.)

ah man you just made my day, that really cracked me up
for once a refreshing thread in comparison to all the sad " aww angry, where's my wacking material bioware! argh nomnomnom"
but to stick to the topic, yes it's a miss and the bioware devs should all sit down together have a cup of warm chocolate and discuss the issue

Simple way, romance Ash, Virmire fireball, leave Liara until after Virmire, to make her think she's going mad. Laughs all around.

I've had similar problems, I told both Liara and Ash that I wasn't interested and still had to act like a jerk to Ash at the locker scene to avoid romance. Just to make sure, I used the first Renegade answer in the very first "discussion" with Ash in ME2. I didn't have her photo then though.
I hope they add a seperate "flirting" line in ME3 that you have to use occasionally in order to start a romance.

WoW. A lot of Virmire ditchers here... that's cold. "Ash, you're special to me... let us bomb Saren's base together." *Normandy flies away* "Lawl nubs I r lyze 2 u!!11 kthxbai."
I think I'll try the "Don't be so friendly to Ash about pissing off the Prothean beacon/avoid conversation with all female crew-members" approach. It will be my fifth time around, after all, and I'd rather not hold out hope that Bioware will get a patch out on time that may or may not be retroactive.
Actually, the whole "Don't talk to fem chars" thing was a tad off. I'll talk to Tali. Because Tali is awesome. Even though she only has three digits per limb and lives in a fish bowl. Still, she's awesome. And she doesn't stalk me. /endshortsentencespree

Here's how you do it. Post first main mission, go talk to Ashley.
4:30-
I hate when people share playthroughs but they're incapable of reading at a normal pace, but it's the only video I could find.
Offer to hear Ashley out by telling her you keep an open door policy. At the 5:14 second mark DO NOT take the "You're out of line" option. Talk to her, be nice/friendly/cordial. Hear her side. When you get to the 6:08 moment, pick the "Why do you feel that option" because it will hurt continuity near the end of the game because picking neutral or Renegade results in Shepard talking about Terra Firma even though when you meet that guy running in the election right before Anderson helps Shepard escape Shepard will say "I'm not familiar with what you stand for". After investigating in full, choose the Renegade "Just shut up" option. You haven't been a ****** to her, but you need to get it through her head she can't let her personal feelings get in the way of the mission. And I've never had a problem turning down Liara, everytime I choose the "just friends" option, it's always worked. It would be nice if there weren't problems, but there are a lot of video game developers that don't focus on continuity, Bioware included.

Thanks S&B, but Ash has never really been the issue. My problem is Liara. Perhaps I could instigate a catfight and launch myself out of an emergency hatch. Hmmm?
I just can't bring myself to nuke Ash. Kaiden's, (or was), a really nice guy, but Ash has family. And then there's the fact that she kicks butt in a straight-up fight. RP aside, as a Vanguard I don't need biotic support and I keep Tali close as my unlock-a-bot, (or whatever she is under there). That leaves Kaiden a bit worthless in my book. Plus, I never could figure out the Elvis hair... I guess I shouldn't mock the dead.

I've always chosen the 'just friends' option and never had a problem with initiating a Liara romance when I didn't want to. I have heard, however, that the romance can be reactivated if you get into a conversation with Liara about asari mating habits. So perhaps try to avoid that particular left side option?
Stopping an Ashley romance seems to be even easier - when she comments on you spending time with Liara, and then mentions she thought you and she were getting along well, picking the 'and that was a problem' option appears to shut down the romance.
You can always doublecheck to see if a romance is active by taking either Liara/Ash to flux and trying to dance with them. If they dance with you - the romance is active. You need to click on them twice in a row whilst you're standing on the dancefloor to do this.

I also had no trouble telling Liara to cool it at the point where she straight-out asks you if you're interested, so I'm not sure how she's failing to get the message. Perhaps Midnight Reyn is right about avoiding discussion of Asari mating after you've told her you're not interested.
As for Ash, telling her off immediately when she gets the message from her sister about Shep's cuteness is indeed an easy way to head off that romance. A little harsh, perhaps, but it's not much more than "no fraternization, damn it!" and is a sure shut-down, and you only cut off that one conversation.
