My game has been stuttering and lagging in varying degrees since launch and nothing I tried seemed to do anything.  Changing cpu affinity, drivers, etc, nothing.  I have a solid computer and this game should not be lagging out like this.  I know because it would randomly work flawlessly then go back to random crap, driving me nuts.

Anyhow, I noticed another thread stating that using a -dx9 tag on the launch string when booting the game solved their game crashing in Windows 7.  I tried this and it worked for my stuttering! :o   I just put the tag on there and no more stutter fest in game.  It runs completely smooth now.

"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\DAOriginsLauncher.exe" -dx9

It looks like it is Direct X 11/10 that is causing my issues with this game.  When I use the -dx11 tag, the game runs like crap, just like before.  There is some incompatibility with Direct X 11/10, this game, and my hardware.

EDIT:  OK, I jumped to conclusions too soon with the -dx10 tag, same issues, but the -dx9 tag is flawless for me.  The DLC service even seems to load faster as well.  before, I wold have to wait a bit or it would flag me telling me I am not authorized.

Don't think it's DX11's fault. Run it DX11 fine here. The other things you mention might be part of it, but I don't think it's DX11 per se.

It appears that there is some incompatibility with this game and my specific hardware configuration while running the game in Direct X 11. This problem has been driving me nuts and this solved it. If I run the game with a -dx11 flag it runs like crap just like before. I am not suggesting Direct X11 has problems for everyone, perhaps the people that are having stuttering issues may want to try it though.

You would set it in the steam properties for Dragon Age under general.  Press the "Set launch options" button and put -dx9

Is this a work around for Steam only? If not, could you please tell me how to do this, step by step? I'm on Win7, x64 too and I was hopingI could try this to lower my lag. But when I right click on daooriginslauncher, I don't know what to do. Thanks in advance.

You are not running any DX 11 enabled hardware, so all you are doing is forcing a specific shader path on your video card. It might be working for you, but it is most likely a driver issue and not a Direct X 11 issue.

I was having the same issue with Dragon Age randomly freezing for a few seconds every few minutes. I added -dx9 to the dragon age shortcut and it has definitely helped with that problem. The freezing started happening to me once I upgraded to the GTX 460 from the 8800GT, wasn't having the problem with the old card.

... Nevermind, the freezing started happening again

Thanks for this. My DA:O: Ultimate Edition was running fine on Very High and High with 4x AA and then it was stuttering after 30 seconds of non-issue, to the point of making want to destroy the freakin thing. Turned down the settings to medium, still stuttered, then low, same thing. I searched (using google after being informed that the site search is broken) and clicked on the first one. This has solved the problem completely. Can run on Very High and High with 4x AA no prob. Thanks again.

thank god for this. a little old, but this resolved my issue. i tried different drivers, video cards and all sorts of settings. nothing worked until i tried this. however, i never really noticed it to be a problem until i really loaded my game down with mods. when i originally played back in the day, i never had this issue.
