In Mass Effect one we saw the red lightning around Sovereign, Fist i just thought it was a VFX to make it look more threatening, But then when Sovereign takes possession of Saren it states "I am Sovereign..", After Shepard defeats possessed Saren the Reaper appears to be without power and open to attack giving Joker the chance to deliver a Coup de grâce.

In Mass Effect 2 we see Harbinger take control of quite a lot of Collectors always followed by said collector being encased in yellow light, So i am wondering if perhaps the Reapers are really the beings of light and the much dreaded mechanical shops we have come to known as the Reapers are really more like their homes/transportation/means to conduct warfare.

Then there's the whole "Releasing control" Thing in ME2, Why release control if there is no danger to one self, But then again perhaps there were danger, Perhaps Harbinger would have died if he had stayed in control of the collector general, just like Sovereign, Perhaps the yellow energy was the real Harbinger who retreated back to his ship-shell.
 
Perhaps their Ship-Shells needs to be made of biological material to allow the Reapers to possess them, Perhaps Sovereign did not take over Saren though his mechanical implants but rather his biological side, perhaps indoctrination is the side effect of being on board a giant possessed biomechanoid.

Reapers are basically a bunch of computer programs (like the Geth but more advanced), and Saren was just a bunch of computer hardware when Sovereign took control. I'm assuming the same is basically true of the collectors. I don't think it had anything to do with 'energy', more like some sort of wireless connection, and if the reaper's programs were inside the hardware when it was destroyed, they would probably be destroyed too, so it released. Just what I would assume.

A reaper is the multiple concious beings that were used to make him, the hull is the organic metal and the Mass effect core is probably because each person has a small ammount of eezo in their system.



They could technically be non coporial...but i dont know.

the collectors had cybernetic implants, not only to give them nascent biotic powers, but to facilitate any of them being "controlled" by harbinger. says so in the codex.
