Planet scanning is a punishment for all those that criticized the Mako and elevators in ME1. It is designed to work against you in every way.

UPDATE: Bioware updated the scanning speed and made the scanner larger, but it's like putting a bandaid on a broken arm. None of the items in this list were addressed. However, the new scanning speed does cut the time significantly. I added 2 more annoyances I noticed recently.

  • The green bars in the scanner-wave-background fade which blurs the peak of the spike.
  • The spikes vibrate violently which makes it that much harder to read peaks.
  • The music is a lullaby that puts you to sleep.
  • The humming of the scanner adds to the lullaby effect.
  • Areas previously scanned are not marked, so you have to do it systematically.
  • You need over 800,000 units. At an average of 1000 units per probe, you must send 800 probes.
  • You have to hold down the trigger (ie, no toggle option).
  • The scanner moves about the speed of a snail.
  • It allows you to collect more total resources than you need. No alert when maxed out?
  • Steering the scanner on the planet is hard since you are staring at the results for peaks.
  • No value pops up to show the number of units earned when sending a probe. (I have to subtract numbers like 125,324-126,891 with each probe?) It would have been rewarding for a number to pop up with a satisfying "ching", but planet scanning was not designed to be fun.

This design violates all the rules of fun. The only thing that's missing is waterboarding. I can only think that this was done on purpose.

Me too, especially when compared to the stuff we had to put up with in the first game.

Did you beat the game yet? The more you play, the more you hate scanning. Trust me.

Heh. I can just imagine the devs sitting behind their monitors, cackling sinisterly to themselves while their fingers drum against each other. Really, I hope thats what they originally intended, because it seems to have worked beautifully.

Quite the opposite for me.  The more I play the more I appreciate those larger strikes which makes the experience all the more gratifying.  It's always a small victory, though, but honestly there isn't much to overshadow them considering how little time you actually spend scanning when compared to what we had to do in ME1 to find and especially manage resources (including inventories.)

You like holding the trigger down for hours? It takes 4 hours to acquire everything.

You like the fact that you don't see the areas previously scanned?

Even if those problems were fixed, scanning is a pathetic joke of game design. For the amount of scanning required, that minigame is in the wrong place.

I agree w/ OP on this one. After multiple playthrough I avoid it at all costs only to get upgrades, nothing more.

If you're holding down the trigger long enough that you want a toggle option, you're doing it wrong.

You did not need the resources in ME1. You could skip all of the planets and still have infinite wealth. In ME2, you must scan for resources (or be stuck with weak weapons and armor).

Just get the save game editor, all the resources you want

Unless you have console version, then you're screwed ^_^

That's how the game is designed. In order to scan, the trigger must be held down.

I do pump the trigger, but that was not the design intent.

So now ME2 lovers enjoy and have a lot of "fun" scanning planets, next time, in ME3 ,when they will have one weapon and one armor for the entire game and have Chuck Norris action game they will be in heavens and for side quest ..more scanning planets !
Just bring back the Hammerhead.

It was about XP not money. Planet scanning is fine, and pretty quick.

360 version. However, Bioware should give us infinite resources on successive plays. We should never have to scan again.

I wouldn't hate it so much if I only had to do it in one play.

While the Mako was kind of repetitive at times the current planet scanning is much worse IMO. What they should of done is added villages and more variety to the planet missions but kept the Mako.

Yeah, beat the game four times now, and each time, I spend several hours scanning (not in one sitting mind you) and it doesn't bother me. I find it kind of soothing. The sound reminds me of the Dreydus (Draidus, Draydis, Whateveris) from Battlestar Galactica.

Planet scanning is one of the worst minigames I have ever encountered as not only does it carry the sin of being boring but also required.

Really?  It took you 4 hours?  Even so, out of 30 or so that isn't bad.  Better, at least, than the recycling in ME1.

You like the fact that you don't see the areas previously scanned?

Why do you need to?  You aren't scanning EVERY inch of every planet, just what you need to get by.  So, you shouldn't ever need to know what you have and have not scanned because once you have reached that point you have probably spent far too much time with it, in the first place, and probably should just move onto something else.

Even if those problems were fixed, scanning is a pathetic joke of game design. For the amount of scanning required, that minigame is in the wrong place.

Better than playing the role of Sisyphus in a Mako.  I'll give you it's not the greatest example of game design, especially for gamers.  God knows how short their attention spans are.  But, it's an improvement on some of the worst things of ME1 and, ultimately, isn't that big of a deal even when viewed negatively.

Small part of a much grander package, you could say, and I wouldn't get so worked up about it.

I liked planet scanning. You don't have have to hold the trigger down the entire time. Hold and search a small area, stop and move over to another area and hold again. It never got boring or annoying.

Meh, the mako's problem was in it's fundamental design, not it's implementation.  Even if you added more to a planet, you would have still had terrain frustrations, invariably awkward controls, and impossible to balance skirmishes so the game is better off without that sort of exploration.

However, if you added something more to scanning you would probably alleviate much of the problems with it.  Unlike the Mako, the tedium with a scanner is created by the time spent with it, and not necessarily the game mechanic itself (we've put up with far worse in ME1.)  So, if you just added a few extra "breaks" to encourage the player to manage their time more effectively, even if they were just a few extra fictional tid bits, superfluous items, or maybe even stock combat scenarios, you might just be able to create something that is wholely enjoyable.
