I agree w/ OP on this one. After multiple playthrough I avoid it at all costs only to get upgrades, nothing more.

Why would you scan for any other reason but upgrades? That is the only reason.

Hold on a sec... tell me you didn't deplete EVERY planet just for the sake of it.

Many people did do that. Why wouldn't they?

WHY WOULDN'T THEY?!?!?...Image IPB

I think many were hoping for some hidden achievement to unlock, like "Environmental Hazard: depleted all planets in the galaxy". :D

That achievement would fall under "cruel and unusual punishment". :police:

How would anyone know that there was no value in depleting planets? You don't know the value of scanning until you are nearly at the end of the game (on a first play-through). Like I said earlier, there is no warning when you have acquired enough materials to buy everything. Bioware just lets you scan into infinity.

You know you have enough materials to upgrade everything... *dramatic pause* ...after you've upgraded everything. Didn't take me a whole playthrough to figure that out. Certainly didn't take depleting EVERY SINGLE PLANET. Not even close.

Scanning EVERY planet in the game to depletion? That's just plain stupid or insane. There is no prior event in ME1 which could lead anyone to conclude that Bioware rewards players for tedious endeavors. There is just no excuse...

It did take you a whole play-through to figure that out, because it takes a whole play-through to buy everything.

I agree that scanning every planet is insane. So why did Bioware design it that way? Why not tell us to stop scanning?

You're right that there is no excuse...for Bioware's poor design.

Many people did do that. Why wouldn't they? You usually get rewarded for mundane tasks in video games. But, they weren't aware that Bioware had a grudge.

Are you joking?
I knew full well that me depleting every single planet was a waste of my time when I started,
I held no illusion of reward at the end of a stupid trivial (and time consuming) task;
I just had to-- =]

You previously said on page 9:
"However the issue I do take much greater offense to is that, despite my
dedication to scanning every bit of planet they managed to design, there
was no secret.. no surprise.. nothing hidden for the fanatical (Or
walk-through wielding)!"

I think you have a dual personality.

What are you talking about? I had all the ship and personal upgrades well before the game was over.

Because... they assumed we aren't stupid. They assumed correctly. At least in my case.

This is as idiotic as people complaining about searching planets for minerals in ME1. You don't have to active go looking for minerals to complete the quest. If you just check planets as you go through the systems or just  get the ones you stumble upon on the way from point A to B in the Mako you will complete the UNC mission before the end of the game with ever really trying. The idea of actively seeking out minerals never struck me as the point to the UNC mineral finding assignment. It always  presented itself a a background assignment that you do little by little as you go along. All the collection quests were like that.

But people act like they are forced to seek out every single node. Don't blame Bioware for your obsessive compulsive behavior.

I'm not the one that scanned all of the planets. But there are others that over-scanned and 1 guy that depleted all of the planets.

You have to be very diligent to avoid over-scanning (on a 1st play-through). Or, you can scan for each item individually, therefore knowing exactly how much material is needed. Even then, you will over-scan, since you will be looking for one specific element, but will end up finding more of the other 3 elements.

The most basic methods of acquiring resources in games are:
  • Treasure Chests (Lost Odyssey)
  • Killing enemies that drop items (Borderlands, Bioshock)
  • Economy Sim (Fable 2)
Planet scanning is totally new to the video game world. It is an uninspired concept, and a broken execution, to say the least.

Yeah, scanning is pretty depressing for me. Fortunately I see that a thread on modding Xbox files was created and stickied recently, so I'm going to give that a whirl and see if I can do away with scanning. If so I'll be a happy camper. :-)

After getting the Long Service Medal, planet scanning becomes almost a non-issue, where in ME1 the Mako will ALWAYS be an issue.

I scan intermittently when i require resources and only scan rich planets. It takes no time at all, I don't really get what people are whining about.

Also I have recently started to selectively upgrade based on my main squad composition. In this play through its Pistols and Sub-Machine Guns. With a little shotgun thrown in.

After using the Gibbed Save Editor for my XBOX 360, I don't even have to worry about Planet Scanning :)

I kinda like hoarding materials. Back when I used to play WoW I had a large amount of gold reserves, and that mammoth that carried vendors on it.

That means I like to planet scan...I can understand how it can be tedious and such, but using a save editor to edit it or what not is cheating, in my book. Which I do not like to do in games (ruins it).

To each his/her own number one.

Not cheating at all, I have beat the game 7 times, scaining is a pain in the ass after your third playthrough.

Yeah, after 8 playthroughs, I no longer want to scan planets, it's just not enjoyable.

Stopped being enjoyable for me after the first 2 planets.:pinched:
