So when will it be OK to just call this thread depleted?

BioWare should've fixed the Mako instead of having it removed. Elevators were also way better than load screens, the Normandy doesn't even feel like a ship it feels like four different floors in a building. I liked elevators, I never complained about them. I also liked staying inside the ship when I was docked, decontamination was also cool. Those little details need to be added back in ME3.

If you go by the average number of probes to acquire everything in ME2, about 800.

If you depend on an alert that tells you to stop sending probes when you've acquired all the elements you need to buy everything, it will never be OK to just call this thread depleted.

The trick is just to scan a couple planets while you're in an area before/after doing a mission to be able to afford the upgrades you got on that specific mission...as opposed to gathering it all at once. In small doses it's fine, I'm actually enjoying it.

I agree.

That was a case of reviewer trends. A reviewer trend is when they repeat each other out of peer pressure. Since most reviewers don't play all games, they just take hearsay and repeat it. In the case of ME, bashing the elevators and the Mako became something "everybody knew".

It was depleted a long time ago.

People fail to realize that you don't have to scan planets for minerals (only for anomalies) in order to complete the entire game. It's entirely optional.

Exactly. I only scan rich planets and probe only the high spikes.

So, having decent weapons and armor is optional? Maybe on the lowest difficulty. How is that fun?

Could have been fun if Shepard could walk up to a collector, flick him on the nose and run like hell in hopes that it falls over dead from confusion and laughter

Scanner mini-game it's not bad..maybe it's a little bit flat...In my opinion mixing mako (hammerhead) exploration with planet scanning wouldn't be a bad idea, if both of them are implemented in a good way, obviously...However I trust bioware! ;)

If the Collector drops items/elements when he dies of laughter, that would be more fun than planet scanning.

Here's hoping the next game has mandatory planet scanning along with combo hammerhead missions.

I play on PC and enjoyed scanning as a variation of gameplay. I'm a little bit surprised, that I can basically deplete a complete solar-system that fast, but I tell myself, that I only harvested ores close to the surface of the planet. I beat the game once and enjoy also scanning in my second playthrough. It's nice to have a good head-start at the second playthrough, too. Major difference is, that now I only scan "rich", or "good" planets extensively for ores with few exceptions like planets having Ezo or planets with anomalies.

I didn't count the number of probes I used, but it was much less than 800! And I invented probably about 95% of all upgrades including the highly optional med-bay enhancement.

P.S.: Also you can find quite a good amount of ores during missions.

I would have liked SOME elevators.  Not as many as ME1, where it felt like they had lost the technology to build stairs in the future, but definitely the Normandy and some other places should have had an elevator loader.

If you want everything, you need 50,000 Eezo, and about 250,000 of the other 3 elements.

250,000 x 3 + 50,000 = 800,000 units.

Each probe sent is about 1000 units.

1000 units/probe x 800 probes = 800,000 units.

You get chump-change during missions.

On successive plays, you get 50,000 x 4 = 200,000 units at the start. You still need 600,000 units.

Probe away! :wizard:

You can get a lot of your necessary upgrades for Shepard with the Long Service bonus and ME1 import bonus. You don't need triple Colossus X/Battlemaster armor and Spectre weapons with the best weapon mods in every single slot for every character to 'complete' the game in Mass Effect 1, nor do you need all the upgrades in Mass Effect 2. Neither of those carry over into the next game.

That was a case of reviewer trends. A reviewer trend is when they repeat
each other out of peer pressure. Since most reviewers don't play all
games, they just take hearsay and repeat it. In the case of ME, bashing
the elevators and the Mako became something "everybody knew".

Sounds like you're describing most unsatisfied forumites, not reviewers.
