Subsequent plays, its just plain bad. You know its just a time sink task you must do. It is one of the major reasons I've never been able to play this game for many replays, like I did ME1. For peple that say they didn't mind it that much, would you rage over it being totally removed for some other automated mechanic?


That's exactly what driving around with the Mako was in ME1 too. In ME1 I checked the wiki for points of interest (and even then they take a HUGE chunk of the playtime), in ME2 I used a save game editor.

is EXCELLENT

You were not obligated to acquire resources to get weapons and armor. There were very few Mako missions that were mandatory. This is not the case with planet scanning. If you want good weapons and armor, you must scan. Even on successive plays.

You were right to say that it is the worst mini-game in history. It is bad enough that we can only think that no game designer would be that stupid. They did this for some reason. Either an experiment to test our patience, or out of revenge for criticizing the Mako.

I don't know if you can even call scanning a "mini-game" or really anything to imply that it's a game, as those are usually tests of chance and skill. This is more like that godawful Where's Waldo abomination on the NES where you just have to search blindly (or methodically if you're some kind of nerd) until you find him because there's no way to distinguish the location with your puny human eyes.

That's right, there was already solid proof that this scanning thing was a bad idea over two decades ago and our lovely Canadian developers said "**** THAT, WE'RE BIOWARE" and did it anyway. Where is your god now?

At least there is no mod lock like in ME1 so on PC you can just add max resources and credits and no more scanning! :-D

Am I the only one who actually liked driving around on strange planets with the Mako? It was actually somewhat interesting at first - different worlds, salvage, investigation sites. There was a sense of exploration. The biggest issue was the lack of variety in planets and locations. It certaintly got stale after awhile.

But, it seems like many of the things in ME1 that were complained about were just completely removed altogether in ME2. The Mako aspect certainly had flaws, but it could have been adjusted/tweaked to be a more enjoyable experience instead of being removed completely. Instead of the Mako, we now have this scanning "minigame", which to me is completely terrible and has no real redeeming value. It's annoying, rather pointless except to gain minerals, and it's a very transparent and lazy way of extending the game length.

Also, call me crazy, but I actually didn't mind the elevator rides - the banter between party members was worth it.

I also liked the Mako. It was a classic take on 1960s mentality of what it would be like to travel to other planets. It's like driving the buggy on the moon. The planets were done well, too.

I also agree about the elevators. I didn't mind them.

You could control a small fleet and send out mining vessels and some escorts to "scan" the planets. Maybe, like in ME1, you get a message that your team has detected a dead vessel or some ruins and you can send out a research team.



To spice it up, some pirates or mercs might attack your mining ship and you'll need to get a team together to rescue them. Maybe your research team will discover something dangerous and you'll have to land to bail them out. Maybe you could even choose to attack and board another ship to steal their stuff if you're bad.

Well you see the probe system is inherintly flawed in ME 2. If they wanted such a system they should have just copied and pasted Star Control 2's. The only benefit in the Probe system is hotspots, but those were sorely underutilized.

yeah just buy mining facilities and let the resources flow into your pocket over time

Mass Effect 1 and 2 are much too micro while Fable is going more Macro. They'd have to somehow justify it but the ME games are far too linear for that approach to make much sense.

I  agree that Fable 2 is more of an open world, but that ecomony is not tied to events. You even make money when the game is off. If you put the game down for 3 months, you will be a multi-millionaire. This could be done in ME.

Imagine putting ME2 down for a month and then coming back to find enough elements to buy everything without scanning manually. (PC gamers have experienced this with their cheats.)

I updated the original post with 2 more issues.

The two purposefully designed issues are (1) that the planet and scanning results are side-by-side, thus you aren't looking where you're 'driving' and (2) that there is no score popup when you send a probe. You have to subtract large numbers each time. So your eyes are constantly moving to 3 places.

That is called hard labor, not fun.
