See, I'd much rather be sifting through and managing the inventory from ME than be doing the hours of scanning required in ME2 required to get the upgrades and such. It's odd. They totally revamp the item/equipment system under the guise of making it more accessible or efficient or what have you, and then they create a whole new system to support it that is the ultimate in tediousness. It is the paramount tedium.

As has been noted in this thread, first time through it wasn't exactly the end of my life. But the scanning definitely grows in annoyance factor with repeated playthroughs. Which is really unfortunate because in every other way, ME2 is a game that is rife with replayability. And playing through the game again is otherwise a pretty awesome experience, because of the different ways you can handle everything and so on.

On my first playthrough, I scanned about 8 entire systems to depleted because I figured the minerals would come in use for something later on (I honestly do not think you could scan anymore than that and remain sane). Needless to say, I avoid scanning until I absolutely have to anymore. I still prefer it over "exploring" the bland mountainous worlds with the Mako, though.

Talking point: what's faster, the scanning on 360 or attempting to go over a vertical cliff in the Mako?

That's like asking what's more effective, shooting yourself or slitting your wrists?  Both suck.

I liked it too... for one planet and then I realised I'd have to scan like 50 planets to afford all the upgrades and I became very sad. It's way to gimmicky. It'd be alright if you only had to find like 5 spots per planet for the same number of resources but it just goes on too long. I spent like an hour atleast my first playthrough just scanning planets.

This is the problem with reviewing games. I'll bet most reviewers play it once on Casual, so they don't understand the tedium of scanning.

There were some negative comments about scanning in reviews, but they should have been harsher. Hopefully, the reviewer will discuss ME2 in the future with more play time.

I liked the scanning thing, it may be boring, but it also takes more time of the player, and at least doesn't give everything directly to the player.

The scanning is indeed Bioware's revenge. I pray they do something different in ME3.

I was so thankful that I didn't have to do as much scanning on the subsequent playthroughs. I recently started a new Shep in ME1 and decided that I Mako > planet scanning.

That is true, but I'm not suggesting that we bring the Mako back, unless they somehow manage to make it as fun as the Warthog. But, they would have to make an FPS to do that.

i really liked the scanning on the pc version of the game, but when i played the xbox version the scanner was terribly slow if the scanner was fast like the pc version it would of been great.

You call that fast? Ouch! Must be painful on the XBox.

To me the minigames (planet scanning, hacking, and bypassing) are fine the first time you play the game, but it really is irritating for multiple play throughs. Minigames just seem really pointless to me. I'm sure bioware could come up with more intersting ways to accomplish the same goals for the minigames in ME3.

Mass Effect has been a real struggle. Bioware is trying to make a game that appeals to both casual FPS players and hardcore RPG players. The unlock mini-games have been dumbed down to the point that they should be omitted altogether.

IMO bioware has succedded. They have made a great franchise with ME. The first game was great with some issues the second one truly showes they know what they are doing.

Planet scanning is a punishment for all those that criticized the Mako and elevators in ME1.

It is designed to work against you in every way.

  • The green bars in the scanner wave background fade which blurs the peak of the spike.
  • The spikes vibrate violently which makes is that much harder to read peaks.
  • The music is a lullaby that puts you to sleep.
  • The humming of the scanner adds to the lullaby effect.
  • Areas previously scanned are not marked, so you have to do it systematically.
  • You need over 800,000 units. At an average of 1000 units per probe, you must send 800 probes.
  • You have to hold down the trigger (ie, no toggle option).
  • The scanner moves about the speed of a snail.
  • It allows you to collect more total resources than you need. No alert when maxed out?
This design violates all the rules of fun. The only thing that's missing is waterboarding. I can only think that this was done on purpose.

[*]10. It's looks like an extremely minor thing but it blatantly insults sci-fi taste / common sense. I mean, how do you mine heavy metals from the gas giants?

ROFL.  I'm sorry but what?   The unlock minigames got dumbed down?    How exactly do you dumb down the simple quicktime event we had in the first game?   Now we have two separate games

Yes, DARN THOSE CASUAL FPS GAMERS, they want to dumb down a simple quicktime event into two different games that each take more time and thinking.   Grr!

Hah.

Planet Scanning is good, but i finish the game with 600000 of all three minerals, and 140000 of Zero Element... Useless minerals... Stop scanning!!!

You poor soul.

This problem was added to my list as number 9. You are not the only one to suffer this.

If you want non-stop action and danger around every turn, Mass Effect isn't the way to go.  I recommend Gears of War, or any other of the fine shooters out there that cater to your insatiable need for blood and combat.

However, if you want to play mass effect you probably need to reconcile the fact that not everything is built to give you cheap and instant thrills.  Some things, like exploration be it by ground or in orbit, will be slow, and it will be methodical.  So, you can either accept Mass Effect for the at-times tedious thing it is, or simply go somewhere else in search of something that better fits your tastes.

Lol, ME2 exploration?? WTF??
Let me explain this, ME2 exploration tends to zero.

Also you make it sound like ME2 its a really complex game, where every upgrade and skill you upgrade really matter, when its not. ME2 is a very streamlined shooter RPG, on normal you can beat the game without changing equipment once.

Bioware is stuck on the concept of "exploring uncharted worlds". This is the only reason why there is a galaxy map. Unfortunately, they came up with planet scanning to maintain that concept.

The writers wasted a bunch of time writing a background for each planet. All we need is a name and maybe a few stats to make it look like a database.

The new system is the result of trying to be as accessible as an FPS, but still retaining RPG elements. In that sense, Borderlands is a better FPS wanna-be.
