Some resources could be uncontested and scanned automatically. Others are defended and must be taken with N7 missions or Hammerhead. You could also pirate, trade or use other means to get resources.

In the end planet scanning was a chore for me.

Shenmue's crate carrying was a chore. Planet scanning is a notch above waterboarding.

Probe Away... the only funny thing that has come from probing. Otherwise, what a GAME KILLER!!!

Sometimes there's an aspect of a game that is "so bad it's funny". This is beyond bad. It's not funny.

I actually enjoy it, I'm a mutant I guess. There is kind of a zen quality to it I suppose, and I was hungry for updates.

Though later in the game I DID get impatient and was just rapid-clicking the trigger so I could move the scanner across the planet faster. The latest legacy character I brought in also somehow ganked the ridiculous amounts of resources I gathered as my first legacy character when I started a new game, so hurray.

I do not find the minning to be that tedious, in some cases it is MUCH better than the Mako that was tedious. I do agree that there should have been more depth to it, quite possibly a few comforts added to it. I think that they should have let you pick what music you wanted to play while scanning, just the selection from the captains cabin would be sufficient. I do think that you should have been able to toggle the scanner. I do think you should also have had some way to show that an area was scanned and mark the deposits according to a setting made by the player 3 bars or 5 bars etc. Where i think they really missed the boat on the scanning is there should have been some way to generate cash from it so tha player couold purchase all the upgrades if they chose. I know what is comming next not being able to purchase all the upgrades is what makes the player have to be choosy, weigh each one and make a decision. I say to that if the player made a decision to mine for money they have in fact made a choice and should be rewarded for thier efforts. Choice is still choice whether it is to pick one upgrade over another or to spend a bit more time to scan for extra cash, one choice is as good as another.

Asai

Although the planet scanning is a substitute for the Mako, it isn't fair to compare them. Making the planets and Mako cost millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours. Planet scanning was practically free in comparison.

So, in terms of game design, planet scanning has no precedent. No game in history has used a metal detector to acquire resources.

Scanning sucks, literally put me to sleep. You're playing an interface. At least with the Mako, it was different gameplay element. I'd rather have the option of driving around like a maniac doing stunts and shooting crap than scanning and wasting money on probes and gas. Also, driving the Mako around you'll find things like artifacts or get ambushed by the geth. Way more fun than scanning for hours.

It's not "way more fun", it's infinitely more fun. The planet scanning fun factor equals zero. Anything that has a fun factor larger than zero is infinitely more fun.

I once flipped the Mako on it's head. I thought it was impossible, but I was on the moon and caught the right bump which flipped it.

So now ME2 lovers enjoy and have a lot of "fun" scanning planets, next time, in ME3 ,when they will have one weapon and one armor for the entire game and have Chuck Norris action game they will be in heavens and for side quest ..more scanning planets !
Just bring back the Hammerhead.

actually maybe some people don't find it an issue, or an evil plot.

personally I hated the mako not just for the boring repetitive "missions" but because of the fact that the damn thing is damaged to easily, the shield took FOREVER to regenarate (with no way to speed it up) and the fact that there have been countless times were I was instantly killed for falling into an area  (like lava or the vas see in virmire)

also I had a problem with those rocket drones in ME that often times would kill you and your party within one hit !

point is, the small problems in ME2 are ,in my opinion, much less irritating the those in the first one

ME2 is improved, but you spend much more time planet scanning than driving the Mako. Driving the Mako on side quests helped you level up faster, but was not required for resources. You must scan planets in ME2, unless you like weak weapons.

Another problem in ME2 is the linear leveling of weapons and armor. The only way to level them up is to complete main-plot missions. If successive plays gave you everything you earned, it wouldn't be so bad.

I've done "The Planet Scan" mini-game in real life as a U.S Navy Sonar Technician. Initially I thought it was neat and easy.

Four hours later I was bored to tears of the damned thing. Never mind you can't even sell your excess minerals to buy the upgrades the petty mission rewards won't let you afford. Worst mini-game ever.

It's not THAT bad...  Yeah, it could be tweaked to be less tedious, but I never had the moments of SCREAMING FRUSTRATION I had trying to push the #%^#&* Mako up those last few feet of terrain.

Sonar signatures are far deeper than the 4 spikes in planet scanning.

I loved mass effect 2 because it allowed me to live out those big childish escapist fantasies I had as a kid, of going into the future to blast from planet to planet having space-adventures, kicking ass, getting any and all of the fine space-bootay that came my way.

I personally have never had childish escapist fantasies about going into the future to become a space miner and slowly drag sensors over the surface of a planet, scanning it for platinum and iridium. But hey, if those were your fantasies, Bioware, that's fine. To each his own. We all gotta have dreams.

Did you play ME1? The "childish escapist fantasy" was better realized since you could land on planets and drive around in a moon buggy (Mako). However, the planets were barren and the terrain was rough. You did feel like you were on another world, though.

I've been suggesting the Fable 2 approach to using planets as resources.

I didn't like the scanning part either. That's why I just googled the planets with the most resources and raped it so that I'll have enough for the upgrades hehehe.

I don't really get what you wrote, but you won't benefit from acquiring more resources than are required.

Planet scanning is one of the worst minigames I have ever encountered as not only does it carry the sin of being boring but also required.

THIS ^^^

How anyone can actually LIKE this boggles my mind completely.

They complained about the Mako segments, which had the chance to actually be interesting as its exploration based (it needed work, but not the axe that it got) and its replaced with a boring as hell mini game.

Planet scanning is the absolute suck.  There is nothing fun about it.  Its entirely too long and drawn out.  In the time it takes me to give a detailed scan of a single planet I could have explored in the Mako.   Which yea the Mako sucked a tiny bit but I loved exploring.  But this?
