I know Mass Effect has always been a first person shooter and has been done pretty damn well so far, however I would like a little more melee contact, in the game the Pistol wipe is nice and all but I would like to see more hand to hand combat or even melee weapons like a sword or Knife. what do you all think about this?? Agree or disagree? would be nice to beable to run up to a Geth and "SLASH" them with a sword, or Poke a Krogan in the eye with a dagger Image IPB

Dedicated melee weapons would be silly. A different Mass Effect game with a stealth focus (you see what Thane could do in hand-to-hand?), sure, but not a game with the heavy gunplay gameplay of the current Mass Effect series.

As much of a fan of melee attacks as I am, I still say melee weapons really don't have a place in Mass Effect. Now, a 2-3 hit combo would be pretty cool though!

It does have melee weapons. You can melee with all your weapons.

Gun vs Sword. 100 meters distance. Who wins?

I think if we had something like modular weapons like Borderlands does, so that you could have a Bayonet Extension that would increase melee damage by X, then I would be fine with that. Having a specific weapon though... it is a bit too Jedi, since all the fans would want the lightsaber option.

Depends on if the sword is 100 meters long?

Never bring just a blade to a gunfight.

Surely a gun (probably a Shotgun) with some sort of Energy Blade Bayonet wouldn't be out of the question?

I could probably see guns with melee attachments on them, but a dedicated melee weapon? I suppose it might work somewhat with the Vanguard. Or rather, any Biotic class could use their psychic-like powers to twirl blades around in mid-air ... a bit like throwing a dagger, but having it come back to you like boomerang. It could work out, depending on the weapon.

Silly to disregard melee weapons. There are plenty of times where I wish I had one. Also just because this is a sci-fi shooter doesn't mean melee weapons shouldn't exist (ever play halo?).

A vangaurd with some kind of mass-effect-field powered jackhammer would be sweet. Or some sort of particle spear, or vibro-knife whatever. An knife-in-the-back style infiltrator would work perfectly in ME3.

And would the sword have been any good without its homing lunge attack that would have made shotguns just as scary?

Vanguard with a giant laser sword would be nice.

I like where melee is at in ME2. It has its place, and is quite useful for busting armour, but having it available as a primary tactic is just a bad idea. Yeah, you have guys running around with a tactical knife in Modern Warfare 2, but it doesn't make any sense at all.

If Bioware wants to expand on the melee in ME3, give Shepard a knife, or maybe a bayonet. We don't need energy swords or vibroblades or laser whips or any of that crap. Aside from the presence of Biotics, the ME universe has a certain credibility and authenticity to its combat that would be ruined by having commandos taking on space knights.

Yeah, biotics should totally get lightsabres mass effect field energy swords.

Samara should have a battle staff that shoots biotic blasts for projectiles. In addition it doubles as a wide-arc melee weapon. How badass would that be? Too bad I don't think I've ever seen squadmates melee.

I wouldn't minda Republic Commando-style wristblade mounted onto my hardsuit but realistically, we already have four different flavours of shotguns. We don't really need any more close range stuff than that and punching.

Halo has a Graviton hammer also, which has great use without a lunge attack. I don't think the halo universe loses and credibility for it either.

The krogans would totally have melee weapons. MassEffect field tech could make some really neat battering rams and stuff I bet. I am just saying, it would be cool to have one melee range heavy weapon, and a tactical knife for shepard.

I have been 100% out of ammo before. All I have left is "elbow?"

I think a stealth element would work in ME fine. Especially with line-of-sight and cover already integral parts of the game. Killing enemies in silence without alerting other enemies would be awesome.

Picture this: biotic charge some hapless merc, jam your bayonet into his chest then pull the trigger. Tell me that wouldn't help you relieve stress.

A rich animation chain for using your gun weapon in melee range? Certainly. A pistol whip kill triggers an animation to have the foe get his head caved in from a point blank shot. A rifle chain that has you hold your rifle lengthwise and shove back with the barrel, followed by a head hit with the rifle stock. Etc.

Dedicated melee weapons? No.

I see no reason to bring the game closer to Halo (Master Chief/Elites/Brutes), Star Wars (Jedi/Sith), Star Trek (Klingons), L4D2, etc.

Only way I can see this working is if they have a new game come out (after the trilogy), set in the Mass Effect universe, where you play an assassin. Even then, your main weapons would be sniper, maybe a silenced pistol, and then a knife of some sort. If they find a way to let Thane live that long, I could see them making a stealth based combat game where you play Thane. You'd get to use biotics and stealth weaponry. I would play that.
