Mordin: Protection against the seeker swarms
Tali: Tech specialist
Legion: Tech specialist
Jack: Biotic specialist
Samara/Morinth: Biotic specialist
Miranda: Squad leader
Jacob: Squad leader
Garrus: Squad leader/Hold the line
Grunt: Hold the line
Zaeed: Hold the line
Thane: ???
I'm not complaining about Thane as a character, but I am curious as to his actual contribution to the mission. He does not contribute to the overall plot progression like Mordin's counter to the seeker swarms, he cannot successfully crawl through the vent and open the door for the tech job, he cannot mantain the biotic shield, he cannot lead a secondary squad, and (as far as I know) he adds no major bonus to the Hold the Line phase.
What purpose does Thane serve?
Why do we need Thane?

-shrug- He's exotic. And green.
But, really. I assume it's because he's just so skilled at killing. He's that 'other guy'. Y'know. The quiet ones who surprise you with instant death.

Bioware wanted an alien LI for the femsheps.
That is a fact.

He has Biotic warp, and is pretty useful for fighting the Collectors.

When we recruited our team, we did so without knowing what to expect. We just wanted the best in a variety of fields. While he ultimately wasn't needed, there could've been a situation in which we needed him sniping skills, or his ability to quietly assassinate others.

Truth is we don't. The story arc is for an assassin but they never tied Thane into the rest of the galaxy so it was pointless for him to play a role in the game. Even Zaeed (completely for giggles character with no purpose) is tied to the Blue Suns. Thane is tied to nothing. Good character, but terrible implementation.

he was supposed to assassinate all the reapers, but shepard had to go and mess things up with his whole silly "breach the collector base" plan

He -always- talks over the radio about the situation at the hold the line. He's our radio man, I suppose.

thane is a hold the line guy. he might not seem like it, but he is a sniper first and foremost. biotics and smg are secondary imo. as a sniper, he can dish out DPS just as fast as zaeed or grunt. though he lacks the defense of a full soldier.

The Illusive Man got sloppy. It's a typo.
We were actually supposed to seek out and recruit Armistan Banes.

Thane's purpose is simply that he is the most skilled assassin out there. That's what assassins do, kill people. He does not do skillful technological tricks or amaze people with his biotic capability, no... He simply takes out people with quick precision.
Why do we have him around? Well... when taking on the Collectors it doesn't seem too bad to have a master assassin with us. Is he the most useful of the team? Doubtful... But that goes for a lot of the party members. In reality you really only need a leader, skilled tech expert and skilled biotic and you're most likely good to go. Half of the characters would not necessarily be required.
That said.. out of the last mission he would belong to the 'hold the line'. Whereas Garrus takes up a good vantage point and issues out commands while he picks the enemies off one by one Thane simply does the latter. And he does it good. He kills them from afar.

Seriously, guys. Bioware wanted to design an alien LI for femshep. That is the reason. It was even said so by Hudson in one of the pre-release interviews I believe.

Or, perhaps he was an attempt to up hanar love, since they might give us blasto for a squadmate in ME3? That would be pure awesomeness!!Cutlass Jack wrote...

Thane is excellent at killling, has a sniper and biotic abilities. his warp isn't as powerful as Miranda, Shepard's but it certainly comes in handy when Shepard and Miranda are stuck in cooldown.
many FShep's need Thane. And now they need a cure . . .

Female Shepard love-interest.
Personally, I would have preferred it if Thane was there for the religious spin, ie, to help you come to terms with killing, maybe to help you save your 'soul' (if you're that way inclined). I thought he had a lot of potential in that area, and could see him playing off against more practical types like Jack. There was a lot of room for development with Thane... but, as previously mentioned, Bioware designed him as the main alien LI for female players.

Because the writer's didn't know how to incorporate them into the ending. Ditto with Grunt and Zaeed.
Everyone else is replaceable.
Everyone has nothing to do with the main plot. You only get them because TIM says so.
