What's up?

I have a massive headache that's preventing me from sleeping. So until it goes away, you're stuck with me.

I wouldn't say that's a bad thing, in fact I'm overjoyed you're still with us ^_^

having missed the 1000 and wading through 30+ pages i realise that i must be the only one that doesn't like fantasy/dragon age... :(

Is it the genre or the game itself? What is it about it you don't like?

i really hate fantasy - it's like poor man's sci fi, i just have this aversion to it (except, curiously the LoTR films). maybe it was being forced to read the hobbit at a young age. i just don't see the appeal of fantasy when you can have science fiction.

I remember trying to read 'The Hobbit' when I was younger, year 5 at school I think. Never got past the first chapter though, lol.

With games I agree completely, but sometimes you want to just pick up a flame enchanted broadsword and smite thine while enemies!Image IPB

With books I couldn't comment, never read a real fantasy novel before.....Image IPB

I takes a slightly different mindset to appreciate fantasy, but there are "typical" fantasy elements I don't like, so I think I understand to some point. In DAO, for instance, the whole Darkspawn thing is nothing more than yet another instance of the fight against the "ultimate evil" I've seen so many times that I'd be sick of it even if I wasn't repelled by the whole idea of absolute good and evil as part of the world's structure in the first place. The LOTR films are excellent, but the story has too much of a religious background for me (as you notice if you've read the books - which I find somewhat hard to read btw).

On the other side, I like things like magic in fantasy because it represents power that can't be separated from you, and is more part of the character than any equipment can ever be.

Unfortunately, fantasy games mostly follow well-tread pathways so there's rarely anything interesting in them on the surface. But I like DAO's political angle, which is unusual for games, and its treatment of religion and the nonhuman races. If you're sick of fantasy stereotypes, DAO is a good place to look for something different (at least, different enough for gaming standards) - if you can ignore the Darkspawn.

To throw in my input.

I love sci fi ten times more than fantasy. But its easier to find good fantasy books than good sci fi books.

The Earth's Children Series (Clan of the Cave Bear), Twilight series Image IPB(I like romance so don't shoot me), Steven King books especially IT, James Paterson Maximum Ride series. Star Wars (episodes 4-6) was good.
Wilbur Smith books, spy books are also cool, Robert Ludlum etc.

Pretty eclectic. You shouldn't have trouble finding a fantasy book you like, as long as you keep away from those inspired by role-playing games, TV, movies or video games. Those are usually pretty bad. I know some people like the DAO books, but they're no exception - too many game-ish elements that make the world feel artificial.

Let's see what I'd recommend....perhaps the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, the Throne of Amenkor trilogy by Joshua Palmatier, and the obvious "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin which should appeal to almost everyone. A bit more unusual, one of my current favorites is the "Chathrand Voyage" by Robert Redick (two books of three or four published) with its inventive worldbuilding. For fantasy spy stories, there's "The Death of the Necromancer" by Martha Wells (her other Ile-Rien books aren't so bad either). Good standalone classic adventuring can also be found in the books of Violette Malan.

That's what I can say without going through my archive. Most of my favorites wouldn't appeal to you, I'm afraid. If you look those titles/authors up you should have a good impression of whether or not you might like them. Maybe I'm completely off with these - I can only try.

Oh wait... you like Paterson and Ludlum... you should have said those before the romance bit. That gunshot wound is your own damned fault.

While most game derived novels are crap, I'd recommend the Republic Commando novels by Karen Traviss. Good books, even if she had to cut the series short because Lucas had one of his 'genius' ideas. If you like character story and military science fiction, they're good. The second in the series is better than the first. This is mainly because there's less charcter introduction and more character development.

I don't know those books, but I can also recommend Karen Traviss. Her "Books of the Wess'har Wars" are very good.

...even if this was all about fantasy book recommendations when it started.

Oops. I completely missed this upgrade. Unfortunately, I like the older version better. This one has too many Miri faces, and those added from the fan art aren't that good IMO. Still no wink  The Miranda in the upper center is good, though.
