Sexual orientation is part of a character's personality. Perhaps they feel it would change their favorite characters too much. To a certain degree I can understand that. Had Miranda been bi from the start it wouldn't have bothered me, but the thought of changing her retroactively for ME3 is uncomfortable. I also would not want for every LI to be available for a same-sex romance. That would make things too artificial.
All in all, I think DAO did it just right. And yes, I do wonder why they didn't use that pattern in ME2. Are SF fans more conservative?
BTW, I don't understand your second sentence - care to explain since I don't know the terms. And what's HP?
