This may be controversial, so bear with me. Would I be correct in assuming Miranda prefers to keep, her romances casual with minimal investment on her end and few to no serious relationships prior to the game? She strikes me as someone who allows herself to grow close to someone--as friend or lover--only rarely to minimize the chance of being betrayed or someone hurting her with her insecurities or generally getting her heart broken.

I agree. That's what I believe happened with Jacob. They grew somewhat close, though Miranda never really let Jacob get to know her, as he says that he has "no idea what makes her tick". She must have quickly realized that he could never be her equal, and subsequently her partner, so she ended it.

IMO that only really changed with Shepard.

i am very ashamed of Japan.. not that these are anything new though. There is no excuse they can make for them being acceptable and if you play these games, you should be sealed in a wooden barrel and sunk to the bottom of the ocean.

Not that I would ever want to have anything to do with that, if somebody does have violent rape fantasies I would rather they live them out in a game than express them anywhere else.  After all nobody is hurt in a game.

Still...that is just disturbing...

There is no evidence to suggest that acting out rape fantasies in a game or by any other means will prevent a person from doing it in real life. If anything, I would think that would spur them to do it even more. If I'm craving cake and I play a game where I find a delicious looking cake and "I" devour it, my appetite isn't going to be satiated in the least. I'm just going to crave cake even more and find a cake in real life to consume. I don't see how it's any different with violent or disturbed fantasies.

yep.. unfortunately these things do exist and there's a roomful of guys somewhere getting all excited about these games and actually envisioning doing these things to women.

I am probably opening up something better left alone but...

if it is just a fantasy where is the harm?  Have you never fantasized about something that would be wrong to do in real life?

and do you honestly think it would stop there?

people who would play these types are games are sick in the head to begin with... it's only going to fuel their fantasies and give them the courage to do it in real life.

LOTS of sickos out there with nothing else to do but F with other people...

True.  If they are using rape fantasy to sate the desire to rape, then a game will only spur them on.

Though regardless, Rapelay is one of the few games I just can't defend at all.

you're not a woman, so it really means nothing to you.  why don't you search for any of those videos on youtube and tell me that it would be okay that a guy fantasizes doing those things to your sister, mother or cousin... is that okay too?

these games are made for one reason- to gratify the player sexually. why else would anyone possibly play this stuff?

i play gears of war all the time and i love it... but the reasons are teamwork, laughing, fun, able to aim correctly with a sniper rifle, NOT groping a Locust against its will and then getting off on it.

seriously, the fact that you are thinking these games as 'somewhat okay' severely worries me. :?

Isn't this the same argument used to ban violence in entertainment as well?  Besides if I go to Literotica.com there will be tons of stories written by women about rape and mind control and other non-consensual stuff...so I have heard anyway...does that imply they are more likely to do those things or want them done to them IRL?

you are obviously missing my point.

come back and post after you've endured say... 4 months of being female.

see how well you deal with being constantly objectified, patted on the ass, harrassed, stalked, oh and possibly raped. then we'll see how you react to that link.

i would never presume to know how easy/difficult a man's life is because i am not one. i would be outraged if the game depicted men being raped as well.. that's SICK no matter who it's done to.

don't make light of an issue that affects women directly as it further objectifies us as sex slaves or the like. you think some 17 year old getting their hands on the rape game is going to respect the women he sees from then on? the chances are much slimmer than if he never played it.

the games are sick and should be banned forever but it will never happen.

honestly, what kind of sicko would fight to keep those games?

someone that shouldn't be loose in society to begin with.

EDIT:  as for the stories you spoke of, the women CHOSE to write them.

the 'women' in the games are FORCED (not given a choice) into sexual acts AND there are images to go along with it.

with a written story, it's words on a page and the author chose to put them there.

CHOICE is the operative word here.

If people are using violence in entertainment to appease their own desire to act violently, then I'd say it's still a valid argument. But like Nadia said, I (and everyone I know) don't play violent games because I get off on the violence. There are about a dozen other reasons for any given game. The violence is something I don't even consider.

And you're taking a very small sample of people and assigning their behavior to the population as a whole. The very name, "Literotica", implies a very specific type of particpants.  It's not fair to say that more women in the general population are more inclined toward those thoughts or behaviors based on what a specific group does. And what does gender have to do with it anyway? Rape is wrong, whether by a man or  woman. Acting out those fantasies in a game isn't going to help a person regardless of their age, gender, background, status, etc. It's completely unrelated.

*pointedly ignores last few posts* Thanks guys. Now, if I could just come up with an ending to this little tale of ardat-yakshis and unhealthily closed off spies that wasn't offensive, I'd be good.

Plenty of men and boys get raped.  I had a job where I worked with boys that had been sexually assualted.  I have no more desire to see that happen to a woman, one that I love (and it is unfortunately rare that somebody doesn't know a woman close to them who has not been sexually assualted in some way) or otherwise, than one of those kids who were probably messed up for life by it.

Am I just crazy about the idea that there are people who fantasize about this stuff?  No.  But as long as nobody gets hurt and they never act on it is it necessarily something that should have laws passed against it?  There are already laws against selling sexually explicit and overly violent stuff in stores.

You'll be alright. I'm sure you can come up with something.

I think it is just safer to drop this argument. It is about a subject that is extremely sensitive and volatile... we are mostly a happy-go-lucky group, let's not screw that up.

Valmy, you might want to just drop this. Otherwise my very personal bias on the issue will start showing through and I'll be completely unable to prevent myself from hating you.

Actually, I'm just going to go. It's time for class anyway. I hope we're discussing happier things when I return. Later everyone!
