He won't be getting a Hugho any time soon. In fairness, these books aren't meant to be savored, just to pass an hour or two. Literary fast food. I'd rather trust that love scene I mentioned to someone else.
Talk to a person who has not read Acension and see if they are lost in ME2. 90% are lost if they did not read the book because Acension builds up ME2 very well and are showen many things that are importent in ME2.
-We are introduced to TIm and how he acts
-we are showen that the Alliance ist aking care of Biotics now and a better school program ism ade
-We are showen Cerberus in better detail
-We see that Cerberus is very well connected and funded
-We are introduced to Omega and the Collectors (both playing huge parts in ME2)
--We are showen the Migrant fleet and why they hate Cerberus
-Paul betrays TIm and this makes TIM lose alot of money and this sets the stage for the next book and even ME2
If you are expecting Lord of the rings or Harry Potter from Drew then thats your fault. Acension and even the first book did a good job at what the point of the books where, to give a deeper understanding of the Galaxy and building to each game.
Neither jtav nor I said we expected more than "literary fast food" from him. That's OK. I do read the books, you know. At least they're not boring. But *you* made the claim Karpyshyn wrote some of the best books in SF - which says, to me, that you'd put them in the same class as LotR and Harry Potter if they were fantasy. And that's clearly wrong.
Ah, and BTW: you don't need to read Ascension to understand ME2. You *may* need either to have played ME1 *or* to have read Ascension.

No I said his star wars books where some of the best, that does not mean much because even the best star wars book is not that good compared to laot of sci-fi. I would not put any of his books near Harry Potter and LotR. Doing so would be just plain stupid. I exepct decents books from Drew and I am always satisfied with them.

I must say, it's kind of creepy how we're in lockstep when it comes to romance, literature, and Miranda.

Drew can do both ../../../images/forum/emoticons/wink.png he wrote the
ME universe, was one of the lead writers for KOTOR, Jade Empire, ME2 and he wrote those two fantastic books in the ME universe, wrote a Baldurs Gate book which was great and those three star wars books based on Darth Bane that is knowen as some of the best sci-fi books ever made.
Perhaps you understand now why I reacted as I did.

Bolded for you, but anyways I don't think Drews work can even come close to such masterpeacis like lord of the Rings, but in termsw of the video game industry and taking the media into book form, he does the best job and and Lucasbooks giving him the rights to write about Darth Bane and showing how the rule of two started shows that alot of book companys are seeing the potenial of outstanding video game writers. Can Drw approve his book writing skills? Yes he can, but is he a terriable writer? Not at all.

Perhaps I should mention I don't like Discworld much except for the first two books or so. Nor is Bujold among my favorites, from the four or so books I've read by her, although I admit she does write well.jtav wrote...

Otherwise I don't think it's creepy. It seems we're both book people. You look differently at game characters and stories in general if you've read a lot of books, and different ones. I guess ComTrav would agree, too. Too bad he seems to have left.

So LucasArts has never given rights to write about certain characters to bad writers? I haven't read many Star Wars books, but I very much doubt that.kraidy1117 wrote...

I do know the SW books by Hambly and the first three by Zahn. It's very long ago that I read them, so my memory might be shaky, but if Karpyshyn's writing in the Darth Bane trilogy is comparable to his ME books, he falls far behind.
As for recognizing the potential of authors from the gaming industry - forgive my cynicism. They would do better if they used authors not from the gaming industry, but those often don't want to write Star Wars books, because the world and LucasArts restrict their imagination too much. So they must make do with second-class authors - some of which may become first-class authors - who will then immediately leave the Star Wars universe behind. Exceptions notwithstanding.
Edit:
Heh - discussion about books. It always makes me forget I'm tired.
