Miranda sat back in her chair. Oriana was moving in with her boyfriend. Oriana had a boyfriend. She hardly knew whether to be pleased or terrified. Oriana appeared to be living a perfectly normal life and having perfectly normal romances. On the other hand, she was still only a teenager. Teenagers tended to believe that everything was possible. The person you loved today would never betray you or break your heart. You were going to be together forever. God knew that she'd thought that she and Katriana would run off to the Citadel and be make their own life. No more hooks or conditions. Katriana had promised her freedom, and Miranda had listened to her heart instead of her head and believed her They had been sixteen and as immortal as any sixteen-year-olds in love. Nothing could stop them, not even George Lawson. Then reality had intervened. She wondered when reality would intervene for Oriana. She wished she could warn her somehow.
No. She wished that she could talk to her. It was a stupid, foolish wish. Oriana had her own life now. There was no sense putting her in danger for the sake of her own petty nostalgia. Besides, in two weeks she would probably be dead. Seeing Oriana would merely weaken her resolve to do what needed to be done. It was only the lingering effect of seeing her sister all grown up that was making her sentimental. She didn't need another reason to be afraid of dying.
