Just don't talk with Liara after you've explored the Asari culture options you get at the start. That should avoid any problems.
And an ME1 playthrough should last no longer than 20 hours if you're playing just for the story in Casual difficulty, even with all the collection quests. There are also quest checklists and planetary maps if you want to be sure to find everything. If you need any of these things, just ask.
