I find it funny that people hark on about Miranda being perfect but conveniently ignore that Shepard is perfect as well. I roleplay my Shep as not perfect and we all know that Miranda has her own problems.
My favourite storyline for Shep is the colonist / hero story. The starting point (colonist/ family taken by slavers) defines my Shep but the second stage (Skylian Blitz) refines my shep. He still has the scars but he overcomes them. This story line creates a Shepard that knows how to overcome the odds.
Anyway, here's a coffee for helping earlier.....

During the work week? Pretty much.

I suspect our Ms. Lawson is a profound cynic when it comes to romance and would remain so even if she herself is ridiculously, stupidly happy with Shep. She doesn't strike me as the type who believes love conquers all. I can just see her arguing with a more idealistic Shep over the asari-krogan couple on Illium. And she would be right, in that particular case. Though Shep (and I) would argue that one failed/failing relationship doesn't prove much.

Well, she was engineered to be smart... that's a pretty unavoidable side effect.

I think she is a total sucker for it actually. A cynic is always an idealist who wants to avoid getting hurt.

Cynicism is a side effect of immaturity not intelligence.

The immature are usually less cynical than the mature though. It's a point of view typically gained from observation and experience. It would actually be immature to overlook cynicism. To not see that the vast majority of actions people take are selfish in nature is just blindness or naivete. Even seemingly selfless acts are arguably driven by a selfish need. Charity, for example, usually gives those partaking a sense of satisfaction or sates some personal value. If it didn't, people wouldn't do it. If helping poor children made people feel s****y, the poor kids would be SOL. Show me someone willingly doing something for someone else that makes them feel bad about themselves and I will bow to thier selflessness.

I'm stillat Miranda breaking into a smile while thinking about Shep. I don't think she lets herself be happy very often.I like her happy.

I believe Valmy is correct the biggest cynics I know are the most "romantic" people they just hate to be rejected so they hide behind a wall.
@Jtav you had me worried... also I think you have to be brave to kill a main character you dont know how people will react to it. I'm probably not using the right word for the context.

Well neither she nor Shep are really very good at being funny.

I have never met a really mature and at peace person who is cynical. They accept the world for all its flaws and do not let themselves become upset reality does not match up with their preconcieved ideals. Cynicism is a stopping point between innocence and wisdom.

I wouldn't call it cynicism but realism. Miranda is intelligent and she sees what's going on in the world. Clearly love does not conquer all, nor does it necessarily last until death.jtav wrote...

It might be that considering the transience of love and happiness makes her value what she has even more. That's not a cynic's attitude.

I think you people are using the wrong term. Cynics believe that actions are selfish in nature. It has nothing to do with hiding behind a wall, and doesn't preclude nor imply romanticism or idealism.
I think the word you are looking for is bitter. Maybe crabby, or hostile... perhaps antagonistic. Full of bile even. Venemous, harsh... one of those.

Do you think she is really experienced in this area to be coming from a position of knowledge and experience?

Wow love is necessarily transient? I have millions of examples when it wasn't to offer you. It certainly can be transient but does it reflect reality or realism to say transience is its defining feature?
