Depends on the publisher.  Some only work through agents.  Some will take unsolicited and unagented submissions.  The best bet, if you don't go self publishing is to hire an agent.

do you have to do anything legally to protect your story at all or is  it a given that the publisher will just read and review it then get back to you?

Its never a given. You have to have it in the correct format and everything or some publishers won't even pick it up.

What MA said is true.  Also, it is probably best, if you don't get a good agent or one at all, to look at coypwriting the material yourself.  Though some publishers might take a stance against that.

They have sumbission guidelines at each publisher. You'd have to research it.

As far as I know, you do have to legally protect your work. I had some of my work published a couple years ago but I didn't have to do it since a contract from an organization was signed by my school. I do know that some publishers won't accept work that is not protected because they're afraid of the potential legal backlash. I'm no expert so I suggest you research before submitting it.

For once I have a question that doesn't involve heaping trauma on Miranda. I have the nasty habit of finishing the romance around the Collector Ship. Any suggestions for when to talk to her for better pacing? As it is, I keep imagine they're getting up to all sorts of things "when it's quiet." I can't get away with that, can I? (And do let me know if I can. I like the idea)

You CAN get away with all sorts of things when its "quiet" ;). I usually talk to her once after I finish Omega, then after I get both Grunt and Jack, then after her loyalty mission. It tends to stretch out the "wooing" stage a bit.

You know what I mean MA. It's only about a week and a half in game terms, but I don't find consummating a relationship when you're hours away from near-certain death all that romantic. My way's more fun.

I also try to spread it out by talking to different characters at different times. I have "tiers" for lack of a better term. Like I'll talk to Tier 1 after Grunt and Tier 2 after Jack...stuff like that.

Is there really any indication how long ME2 takes in terms of time in the game world itself? I know ME1 supposedly took course over a few months (Ashley says it in a convo).

Is it really only a week and a half? I always figured it was longer than that...at least in my mind.

Not that I know of no, but I have to say at the very least 3 weeks. Thats my "educated" guess based on nothing but wishful thinking.

I like to think that when you travel to a different system/cluster, a day or two will pass. It kind of makes sense in my mind, making the events of ME2 most likely span over the course of a month or two, or more.

I would say a few months just like ME1, that's my educated guess...

I'm thinking its more along the lines of a few months myself, but not less than 3 weeks...I just can't see it.

I told you I was a sap. And now I'm wondering what I can get away with in terms of physical intimacy in something set between the ship and IFF if they've already had the whole "promise" convo. Not sex, but probably quite a bit else (Use your imagination. I don't want to get the thread locked)
From the Collector Ship to Omega 4? No idea, but ten days feels about right. Whole game? 2-3 months. It's going to take time to travel between systems and gather resources.

Sounds about right, but I'm a bit mixed up. They go from the derelict Reaper to the Relay not from the Collector ship to the Relay right? And, no, they don't have to have sex in order to show each other how they feel. Could be that after Moments I'm sick of lemons...
