I've always considered marriages in stories the end of something interesting rather than the start. It's just too conventional for me.

The best "good" end I have ever seen is in "Riddle-Master" by Patricia McKillip, one of my all-time favorite fantasy stories: the couple sits on a beach looking over the sea. Both have acquired extraordinary abilities setting them apart from the rest of humanity, and they reflect about how this will affect their relationship. Will she live in the sea with him visiting her from time to time? Will they have children? Whatever it will be, it's clear that their relationship will be something different, something new. The only constant is their love for each other. Everything else is the future, undetermined as yet. The end of the story is the beginning of the next.

I'd like to see a similar ending for Miranda and Shepard. Their story, after all, will impact the future of humanity, and they themselves may represent that. Pointing to something ultimately new, their relationship should not be caged by a conventional institution like marriage.
