[...]However, that does not mean that  mind over matter doesnit fit in such a science fiction universe.

But then I don't believe in a physical, causally closed universe.  Physicalism just doesn't work for me.  So science fiction and fantasy are alike in that respect for me.

So, what works for you, if you don't mind the question? For me, it's like this: Dualism doesn't work, because as soon as you have one fundamental aspect act on the other, the duality collapses into one. Idealism doesn't work either, because there too many indications that abstract concepts do not have a reality of their own.

BTW, I vote for "eroticicm" as the "ism" of the day.

I believe in a form of idealism.  The "physical" world was created with limitations and boundaries, that operate both seperate and in connection with the "spiritual" world.  While the physical world is mostly constructed and run by physical principles and consists of physical actions, the constant substratum necessary for it to continue to function has to be something that is boundless and eternal.  This substratum can override the physical at any one point, but mostly it is "dormnat".

The most natural analogy is that of a vidoe game actually.  There is a basic programming and structure to the particular world in question, but at any time, the creative force to that universe can alter the code temporarily (cheats) or completely rewrite aspects of the world (mods).

In the "real" world the "programmer" is naturally beyond our current perceptions becuase we are part of the limited, bounded world.  The "programmerr" is not.  It doesn't operate by our programmed rules, thus it is alien.

Also, abstract ideas by their very nature would not have a reality in comparison to the physical concrete identities.  Abstract ideas are non-physical properties, thus the reality is inherently different and will not be discovered by empirical observation. Also... consciousness is quite a wildcard in this discussion.  Physical science cannot explain its existence, nor even prove it... yet we all know it does exist simply becuase we are conscious.  No physical proof.  No concrete foundation... simple abstract certainty.

The problem of science... it cannot prove or disprove the metaphysical.  It is limited to a physical plane of existence.

Word of warning though... never invite a philosopher to talk about metaphysics!  We all love to get long winded! Image IPB

Science without faith is ignorant, Faith without science is blind

and it is to late here for a proper philosopical disscution

Good quote actually.  Never denounced science as useful.  I just don't hold it as the end all to answering the questions of the universe.  It can answer a lot, but at some point it fails.  That is when the metaphysical aspects of our beings come in... our souls, if you will.

But Miri is a genius... we have to at least make an attempt to appeal to her intellectual side.  Then we pour the warm chocolate Image IPB.

Can I have first go?

Anyways it was an intresting read Kab. I myself beleive in both science but I do think there might be a powerful force out there. I find that religion is fake tho and these books to be fictional.

A lot of the great theorists and science oriented thinkers were actually quite spiritual. It is only recently that some scientists have attempted to elevate themselves as the proprietors of all knowledge. It is quite frightening actually... it mirrors the rise of almost every religion known to us.

I ascribe closer to the Eastern Philosophy of "The Way"... every path gets to the same end.  Though the journey and the end are always the same.

Good morning thread.

I actually think Miranda's romance should end something like Jaheira's in Baldur's Gate 2.

The years following the Bhaalspawn saga were kind to Jaheira. They couldn't be called peaceful, by any means, but her relationship with him weathered it all. Theirs was an unshakable union, and while duty or adventure might separate them for even years a time, they always returned to one another. Her friends would marvel at how secure in this Jaheira seemed to be, especially considering her initial reluctance, but she would chuckle when thinking back on those first cautious days. After all, they had literally been to the hells and back, and when the gods themselves couldn't separate the two, what were simple months and miles going to do? She lived long and well. Not always with him, but never truly apart from him.

Seems appropriate.

I think people mix up religion and spiritual alot, that is why crap like science vs Religion happens.

Spiritual is nothing like religion, I am spiritual as I beleive that there is a powerful force in this universe and I do beleive in spirits. However I don't beleive in any of these sacred books, releiiogns or that if you are a sinner you go to hell ect.

It means that science can't solve everything somethings just have to be taken on faith

True.  I have seen so many people that use spiritual and religous interchangeably.  It's sad since they don't realise the fundamental error in that line of thinking.

and the same thing with faith, you need science to solve certain things to. I love the quote.
