Hello friends. I have returned. Glad to see the thread has not yet been closed.
This is somewhat disturbing however. It appears they are growing faster than we are.
We must rally more Talifans and stay on topic more...

We're better than that andy. We're not like others, we like all the characters (most of us). Don't stoop to anyone's level.

I find it hilarious that some feel threatened by our thread... even when they are posting 3.6 times faster than us. The Miranda effect is a powerful force.

So, what works for you, if you don't mind the question? For me, it's like this: Dualism doesn't work, because as soon as you have one fundamental aspect act on the other, the duality collapses into one. Idealism doesn't work either, because there too many indications that abstract concepts do not have a reality of their own.Kabraxal wrote...
[...]However, that does not mean that mind over matter doesnit fit in such a science fiction universe.
But then I don't believe in a physical, causally closed universe. Physicalism just doesn't work for me. So science fiction and fantasy are alike in that respect for me.
BTW, I vote for "eroticism" as the "ism" of the day.
I believe in a form of idealism. The "physical" world was created with limitations and boundaries, that operate both seperate and in connection with the "spiritual" world. While the physical world is mostly constructed and run by physical principles and consists of physical actions, the constant substratum necessary for it to continue to function has to be something that is boundless and eternal. This substratum can override the physical at any one point, but mostly it is "dormnat".
The most natural analogy is that of a vidoe game actually. There is a basic programming and structure to the particular world in question, but at any time, the creative force to that universe can alter the code temporarily (cheats) or completely rewrite aspects of the world (mods).
In the "real" world the "programmer" is naturally beyond our current perceptions becuase we are part of the limited, bounded world. The "programmerr" is not. It doesn't operate by our programmed rules, thus it is alien.
Also, abstract ideas by their very nature would not have a reality in comparison to the physical concrete identities. Abstract ideas are non-physical properties, thus the reality is inherently different and will not be discovered by empirical observation. Also... consciousness is quite a wildcard in this discussion. Physical science cannot explain its existence, nor even prove it... yet we all know it does exist simply becuase we are conscious. No physical proof. No concrete foundation... simple abstract certainty.
The problem of science... it cannot prove or disprove the metaphysical. It is limited to a physical plane of existence.
Word of warning though... never invite a philosopher to talk about metaphysics! We all love to get long winded!
(1) If you cannot prove the metaphyical by logic and not by observation, isn't this indication enough that it doesn't exist?
(2) We experience ourselves as conscious, that we can say with some measure of certainty. Nothing more. It's a problem of language in some way: our minds can "nominalize" a process as an entity, but that does not mean that there is anything in reality corresponding to that entity. Consciousness might just be an attribute of living matter above a certain level of complexity. In fact, I do think it is an emergent property that can't be observed at lower levels. I am quite convinced that science will show this at some time.
(3) Abstract ideas are information. Information can't exist without a carrier. All right, you can *say* there is something fundamentally non-physical about it, but that's nothing more than an unfounded statement. My answer, equally unproven but IMO more plausible, would be that abstract ideas vanish when they are separated from a carrier (a human brain, for instance).
(You might notice I argue from a nominalist position, which means we probably won't find common ground)
What it comes to is that I can't see the necessity of the nonphysical to explain anything. Add that it can't be proven, and it remains purely in the realm of belief. And that was never enough for me.
OK, this is, interesting as it is, as OT in this thread as "Chuck"....which means we can continue this, LOL!!!
