I thought about asking her just to mess with her but I figured it was bad form to scare the new posters off when the rest of you guys already do such a great job of it.

(1)... it doesn't prove anything.  Logic has proven that the metaphysical does exist and that it doesn't exist and empirical observation would never brush Metaphysics.  We have gotten nowhere.

Indeed. And the default position if nothing is proven either way and observation is impossible is....to assume nonexistence.

(2) [...]I do not think science will ever put something under the microscope and say "look, consciousness".

Some things exist we've only observed through their effects. Some subatomic particles for instance. And if you find the concept of emergent properties "ridiculous" I expect an explanation of why that value judgment is warranted.

And by the laws of conservation, the abstract ideal must have always existed since something cannot be created from nothing.

(a) By your own reasoning, the abstract isn't part of the physical. The law of conservation is a physical law.
(B) Obvious alternative: It may be the physical that is eternal. But I rather think our understanding of time is incomplete.

Also, I contend that the physical cannot exist without the abstract (or the metaphysical).  In order for there to exist something that is bound by time and space, there must be something that is eternal and limitless.

False assumption: we do not know that the physical as such is limited in time and space. If anything exists beyond the time and space we currently know, we know none of its properties.

You need a static "comparison" point in order to recognise movement in any fashion.

In which way do the existence and properties of the physical correspond to movement in a way that an inference about one automatically also applies to the other?

Thus there is an aspect of our being that is not bound by physical limitation and thus we are able to experience the perceptions we are afforded. Otherwise we would simply be nothing more than the stream instead of the vessel travelling it.

Non sequitur (see above). Also: we "are afforded" perceptions? Well, this would presume what you want to prove. I sense some circular reasoning here, although your analogy about streams and vessels is cloudy enough that I'm unable to put the finger on it.

I accept that you believe different than I do, but your reasoning is flawed.

As for faith, things exist I value in a fundamental way. Purposes, possibilities of futures, conditions and modes of life and thought. I do wish and hope that they are attainable, and live and act as if they were, but nonetheless do not take them for granted - because I do not know, and intellectual honesty demands I accept that. But whatever I believe in, the supernatural is no part of it. To put it more poetically: if one night, I look up at the stars and galaxies, and envision their reality in my mind, and everything this big universe makes possible, I see more wonders in one second than the spiritual teachings of ten thousand years can give me.

Edit:
Having thus outed myself as a space romantic, I discover to my delight I'm actually more on-topic with this that the rest of this page.

Do it! Do it!
Or at least PM me if the general consensus disagrees with me... which they had better not.

Sidenote: Am I the only one in this thread who loves Bon Iver? God, "Skinny Love" gets me every time. Reminds me of Chuck and Sarah after watching the show so much. /OTness

I shall risk the wrath of Darth and post it ANYWAY! :P

Seriously. Garrus is the hardest dude in the ME galaxy to write.

When he arrived at the mess, Miranda was there talking with Mordin and Dr. Chakwas. Their eyes met, and Shepard badly wanted to speak with her. Instead, he looked away and continued down the hallway to the main battery, cursing himself for his cowardice.

Garrus was there, working on the weapon control console. It was half disassembled, and computer components were strewn about on the floor. Hearing the door open, he turned to face Shepard.

“Commander. Need me for something?”

“Just wanted to see how things are going down here” Shepard lied.

“Slowly. It’s these damn Thanix cannons. They’re fickle enough when your ship hasn’t been blasted half apart.” He paused to put down his tools. "There’s a reason they aren’t certified for general use. If you don’t keep the electromagnetic field generator perfectly calibrated, you’ll have a containment failure on your hands. But that look on your face tells me you didn’t come down here to ask about my guns.”

“Your biceps are very impressive, Garrus” Shepard replied.

“I misused another human metaphor, didn’t I. Dammit.” Garrus flipped a switch to close the door to the battery. “Start talking, Shepard.”

“I’m fine” he started to protest, but Garrus cut him off.

“No Shepard, you’re not fine” he said in an exasperated tone. “I don’t know much about humans, but I do know you. You look terrible.” He paused, running his hand over the scars on his face. “Worse than I do.”

His comment elicited a small smile from Shepard. “Haven’t seen you do that in a while” Garrus remarked. “Whatever’s bothering you must be serious.”

Shepard didn’t answer. “It’s Miranda, isn’t it” Garrus said. “You two have been avoiding each other.”

Shepard still gave no reply.

Awesome job, yet again, Jedi! Miranda was barely present in the excerpt, but their tension was palpable. It kind of hurt to read it and know how much the situation hurts them both. I also think you portrayed Garrus perfectly. I'd say all that worrying over capturing his character was for naught. Can't wait for more!
