I know we've probably discussed this at length before and I can't remember if anyone thought of this but... I think I know why Miranda is immortal up till the final battle segment.
If you think about it, it is fairly obvious. At the start of every segment there is a cut-scene in which Shepherd AND Miranda talk. After the vents, Shep talks with Doc, Joker and EDI chat, then either samara/morinth, jack or I think Miranda (is next in line after the former 2 if they dead/not recruited I think) talk bout biotic field, miri asks who want to do biotic field, miri asks diversion leader, miri states can't go back when doc asks for escort, shep states sending someone back (or not), cue 'Biotic walk', after biotic walk, Miri is the one to ask EDI what the next step is.
If you think about it, to have made Miri mortal before this point ie. able to be used as escort or killable during the diversion leader part if not loyal, would mean that they would basically have had to have created a ranked list of who would be next in line to take Miri's place in that cut-scene just before the final battle. Which would have meant every VA for the potential team would have needed to have done those lines and they would've needed to test each character in that spot.
Making Miri immortal till that scene saves them the time and hassle of doing that.

Other than for a
'everyone dies' or
'shepherd and everyone but miri dies' playthrough would I contemplate having miri non-loyal, HELL to the NO

Edit: @Ieldra, well I think people are already working on the first two. To be honest I can quite easily see both being prevalent in the future and to some extent can't see either of them removing the other from choice. With regards cybernetics, I don't think for a long time we'll see the similar situation to that of say
"Ghost In The Shell" or
"Blade Runner" whereby someone is virtually 90%+ cybernetics with just their brain or something left that is their own.
There will of course be people who will remain in the fourth path simply because they will view the other ideas as wrong due to their beliefs be them religious or just ethics. I don't know if it is because am a sci-fi fan, but I am a big believer in cybernetics. I doubt I'll be around when they become mainstream and affordable though hehe
