You're right about the cues her movements give. I've been watching her walk in cutscenes, for instance, and OK, it *could* hide more or less emotion. I think we put some of our own preferences into those aspects of her that remain a bit unclear. I know I do. Of course in stories that's what we do, and her character has enough different aspects that we can without missing the mark, so to speak. But in this case I don't think that "cool professionalism with a hint of emotion" she mostly displays is a mask. Most of the time, anyway - consider the situation where she watches her sister after her loyalty mission, then consider the confrontation scene between her and Jack as a contrast.Kabraxal wrote...

Just read it. Short but intense. Your vision of Miranda is different from mine - mostly because her coolness and detachment comes across as not much more than a mask, and I think it is more - but it's interesting. And the tension is palpable. It also starts getting a bit hot in there, even though you only hint at it.Kabraxal wrote...

Since she tends to emote more with her body, interpretations of her demeanor will vary quite a bit. Hell, most people miss her physical cues completely. I always saw the disconnection as a defense mechanism, not her real self. I can fully understand not agreeing with that though. She is a deep character... that is why we love her!
Regarding your story, emotional turmoil is what this chapter is about, so it's appropriate to make her feel more deeply. I just got the impression that you write this into her as more of a general facet of her character than something resulting from an exceptional situation. And because I think her emotional detachment is more than a mask, she comes across as a bit....odd.

That makes a lot of sense. And thinking about it in retrospect, I can definitely see what you mean. It just never occurred to me before.Kabraxal wrote...

I just read it, Kab. I like it a lot so far.
I agree with what Ieldra said about Miranda's true demeanor, but I quite like it, to be honest. I always write Miranda as being more "what you see is what you get", for the most part, but that's mostly because I had never thought of it in the context you did.
So, great job. 3 chapters in and you're already making me rethink her character, lol. I can't wait to read more!
It wasn't until my second Miri romance that I actually noticed much of her body language. I already had some cracks on her demeanor from her loyalty mission, the betrayal and then her tears when she goes to talk to her sister.... I started to wonder then. When I noticed the body language and facial expressions through-out, it just hit me (personally) that she actually yearned to let loose of that disconnection. That scene when she discusses her "perfection" and her desire to not be known solely for that took on a whole new meaning for me after that and revealed her in a new light.
But this may be because I am like that is so many respects. Outside, in the real world, I put up a similar facade. I saw many parallels.
I noticed a lot of her physical gestures and subtle body movements that it seems a lot of people missed, but I never took it to the point where I thought "her mask is slipping". I just assumed it was Shepard that was getting her to reveal a side to herself that even she hardly ever saw. I never thought that maybe it was more about her letting him in than him changing her, in a way. I'm not sure that makes sense because I'm really tired, but I hope at least the gist of this isn't lost in translation.
BTW, how are you feeling tonight Kab? Better than last night, I hope.

I mean, she goes from ruthlessly executing Wilson in cold blood and just as coldly telling me she'd rather of resurrected me with a control chip in my brain to telling me personal history about her father (which is obviously a big thing to her). I wonder how much dialogue of each character was scrapped by the writers before they even starting vo work, because while I love Miranda, that change in her character was just too... stark.

I think it is a general facet of her character, one that she has hidden and buried though. Since most of the build up happens in her head though, and while she is alone, it is more pronounced in these chapters than it will be for quite some time. She clearly puts up a wall to Shepard once he's awake, so that should be some interesting material to play with.
And like I said, interprettaions will vary. Some see only the ice queen, others see mostly that, otheres see the blend of the ice queen and a normal woman, and then there are others who see her as an emotionally deep and connected woman who has clammed up and taken on a persona.
As long as each interpretation remains constistent in the various fics, almost all of them work... not so much the out and out **** interpretation though.

While I realise I may be lynched for saying this, I thought it was rather unrealistic in game how quickly it was for Shephard to thaw out the Ice Queen.

Shooting Wilson made sense and is not just an action of an Ice Queen. The chip: she is a practical woman, so it makes sense that she would have preferred this method in the beginning. As for the confrontation she has with Shepard over it... she was just attacked, Shepard is questioning her, and the ****load of stress she endured for 2 years nearly blew up because of Wilson and Shepard isn't acting all that grateful. I would be a bit terse at that point as well.
And Meg: better. Farscape is coming in today for me and I plan a nice marathon with a stiff drink. So I should be fine.

You're just gonna jump ship and leave us? Ah well, I can't hold it against you, this thread is progressing much slower than usual.
Also, Kab I got around to reading the latest chapter in your fanfic. Well done man, liking it alot!

I'm surprised my fic actually has caused an actual serious discussion on the character traits of Miri though. The silly guy inspires an intelligent debate... o yeah!

I gotta admit that I was caught off guard by that as well...seeing an actual thoughtful and intelligent debate rather than the usual "Let's set Shaw on fire" conversation. Mad props for that.
@Nadia: I think, but I'm not sure, that Meg said she ordered a 1 year Gold Card, shinobi might have done that as well. I'm waiting for payday next Thursday to order a card and a new headset, so I definitely will play when I get them.

@Nadia: I would game if I had gold, but sadly, I have to wait another week or so for that card from Amazon to arrive.
@Odin: You gotta admit - the Miranda shooting Shaw in the face gif is pretty epic.

Yeah, having an actual discussion about Miranda was... strange. And very welcome. I would discuss more, but I've honestly run out of new things to say and I doubt anyone wants to hear me repeat myself over and over.AccursedOdin wrote...
