@Redbadger - yeah, bit slow but that's how it goes. Marathon not a sprint, quality over quantity, etc.

Mass Effect fields and FTL flight why it would or wouldn’t Work

Theoretical Physics 101

E=mc²

Now for thous of you who don’t know E=mc² translates as Energy = Mass x The speed of light Squared, what this mean to FTL flight is that the closer you get to the speed of light the more your mass increases.

Let me explain.
In order to accelerate an object Energy must be applied to the object. Now take into account the equation E=mc², we know that the speed of light is constant so this means as the energy is increased so to must the mass as they are the only variables.

Now lets add a Mass Effect Field (from here on referred to as a MEF) into the equation, by artificially altering the Mass of an object one or two things could happen.

First by artificially lowering the Mass the Energy required would also lower resulting in faster acceleration with less Energy acting on the object.

Second if you could theoretically keep the Energy acting on the object at a constant rate while lowering the Mass artificially with a MEF, what would happen to the equation, another variable would have to occur theoretically augmenting the speed of light.

Now this creates it’s own problems for as an object approaches the speed of light space compresses around it as it’s mass increases essentially squished the object together like an accordion at leased to the outside observer. So essentially you would have to brake through the fabric of space in order to brake the speed of light (ie. space/time).

However assuming all this could occur, would you be able to see the object at all as once it brakes though the fabric of space/time it is no longer in our perceived space for us to view.

This is all theoretical of cause, the only way to know for sure would be to create and study MEFs, which we can’t, after all that’s why it’s called Theoretical Physics.

For those of you who read this thank you and have a cookie.
P.S. I apologize for any headaches you may now have.

Seriously though, that seems very well thought out and put together. I'll be honest though, it's way over my head, lol. Good work though.

Lol, it's something to consider. Although I think we're all on good terms now, we're just trying to stay more on topic, but a little leeway is allowed, just not to the point of taking over the thread, you know?

There are several different problems with mass effect fields and FTL. They have been outlined in various threads in this forum, in this one among others. One of the biggest may make even Miranda's head explode: and kind of FTL travel, under the assumption that general relativity remains valid, inevitably results in time travel becoming possible, which violates causality and causes paradoxes. Details outlined by adam_grif in the linked thread on page one.

Thus, FTL travel of any kind would need a fundamental change in our understanding of physics. Which may come tomorrow, in ten thousand years or never. Things to think about when it comes to intelligent life in the galaxy also include the Fermi Paradox and the Drake Equation. All in all, things look rather bleak. But you never know, and as long as we don't, we'll find stories like in ME inspirational.

BTW, here is a nice little overview of information about Miranda. I found it useful because I don't have ME:Galaxy.

Hey...

I just read it on Kotaku. I miss you guys! :D.

And our thread is acting much better now!

Good find, antilles. Saw it Kotaku as well and came here to post it but found myself beaten to it by you.

As for the comments, most of those guys are just plain blind and moronic. This is not heavy make-up. She says it in the beginning, it's an everyday look to highlight certain features such as the eyes and cheeks.

@Ieldra: It definitely helps that she shares some facial features with Miranda. It was the first make up vid I didn't close after 10 sec at most.

Probably not a very good idea but what do you people think about suggesting to Darth that this video be embedded or at least linked in the OP?

Perhaps Meg, Flashy and Annjul could then post the results of their attemps. :P

Embedded, no. LInked, perhaps. I think we should be careful not to overload the OP. I'd appreciate some good Miranda lookalikes, but let's face it: most documented attempts, for anyone, by anyone, are pretty bad. The linked one is an exception in that she already starts out pretty nice and also doesn't overdo it like many others.

Come on, don't tell me you wouldn't appreciate the endless teasing material if our female members showed us their attempts. :P

Besides, we might be pleasantly surprised with the results.^_^

Yes, but that would invalidate FTL again, because then you'd not be travelling at FTL, but only to a different universe where you'd been at your destination in the first place, and there would be no absolute causality between all these universes, so you'd never know exactly "where" you are. Of course, it may just not matter because our lifelines would remain invariant, and of course that's all that matters to us. Or not?

Hmm...if you put it like this.... However, in their place, I would be extremely wary of putting myself on public display, beautiful or not. In fact, I would feel bad if I encouraged that instead of warning them off.

Technically you would not be traveling to another universe, a new universe would be created around you by your actions, in where you arrive at you destination before you left
