Here's a question to breath life into this thread
What are some of your greatest / funniest / most satisfying moments in gaming?
Hmm. Some of them are quite a way back....
- In Fallout (1) (1996), sneaking into the Military Base without getting caught - and getting 1000xp for that unusual achievement. Fallout often rewarded nonstandard behaviour in this way, which is why I think it's still one of the best crpgs ever made. Too bad the combat is annoyingly slow, and it looks outright ugly these days.
- The final scenes of the game "Realms of the Haunting" (1997). After a long and arduous trek through several layers of reality, it ended in what I can only describe as one of the most evil good ends imagineable.
- Finishing the mission "Return to the Haunted Cathedral" on the highest difficulty level in "Thief (1)" (1998) No game before and after matched the level of tension in that single mission. Too bad stylish sneaking games went out of fashion.
- The intro of the game "Spellforce - the Order of Dawn" (2004). Where else would a game start with the destruction of the world and introduce central concepts of the game at the same time? It, together with its expansions, also had about the best protagonist's storyline I've ever seen in a game, even though it was imperfectly implemented.
- The love scene with Vesna Hood in The Witcher (2007). What the peasants on the other side of the river made of what little they could see and hear of it - that's one of the funniest moments in 20+ years of gaming.
Gods, there are so many of these great moments, I can't recall them all. System Shock and the encounter with Shodan, Starcraft and its immortal characters Kerrigan and Zeratul, the true 3-dimensional levels in Jedi Knight, the main antagonist in Baldur's Gate 2, Deionarras haunting song in Planescape:Torment, the impossible Funhouse puzzles in Wizardry 7, the final decision in Deus Ex, and countless others.
Well, I guess waking up to see the face of one Miranda Lawson in the intro of that game "Mass Effect 2" also has the potential to become one of the great moments.
