Hi guys.
First off I would like to say that I do support Miranda returning in ME3. Even
if people don't like her character (I like it) they have to admit that her ability
to strip an opponent's defenses and leave them vulnerable to a "Shepard
Paunch!" is a valuable asset to the team. Those that don't recognize these
as useful probably don't play above veteran/normal difficulty, or are blinded
by personal views and pre-conceptions of her character.
But the reason I wanted to post here was to discuss
Miranda's upbringing. I keep a few topics in open tabs on my browser
because I find them interesting or humorous and this is usually one of
them, though I will admit to not reading every page/post. I saw the
troll a few pages back talking about how Miranda was wrong to take Oriana and
whatnot, but that's not what I wanted to discuss. Well, less discuss and more
ask opinions on, this thread moves fast enough that the topic will change and
never mention this again after a few posts.
I was wondering if anyone else got the vibe that Miranda's
upbringing wasn't as some princess in a mansion surrounded by toys and
servants. Anti-Miranda forumites and Niket seem to have reached the general consensus
that Miranda was living in the lap of luxury and then just decided that life
would be better if her father wasn't there to tell her she couldn't have an
eighth pony because she already had one for each day of the week.
It's like they heard that she came from a wealthy household
and therefore was spoilt beyond belief. I have a friend that hates/strongly
dislikes anyone that doesn't have to work everyday starting from their 16th
birthday, and I wonder if this is the complex that leads to people's misconceptions
of Miranda. It's odd because other than Niket saying that growing up poor
wasn't awesome, nothing is really mentioned of Miranda upbringing to suggest or
support this. Unless I missed something, feel free to point out my lack of
observation.
But I get the feeling that Miranda not being
forthcoming with details about it suggests that it was either a very
emotionally stunted relationship or she was being trained from birth to kill
her opponents both in the boardroom, on the battlefield, and, if her father was
exceptionally shrewd, in the bedroom too, for negotiation/assassination
purposes.
For example, in the emotionally stunted one, maybe she only
got a hug if she out preformed his already high expectations. Or he was simply
never there physically/emotionally and she was raised in an almost Spartan way.
Maybe she admired/loved her father, but he was so used to discarding her
sisters that he didn’t bother to get attached to Miranda either, and so
dismissed any of her attempts to bond. I do believe that this is a very
unhealthy way for a child to live, so Miranda probably wouldn’t be so well
adjusted if these were the case. But she is “Perfect” so she may have just
dealt with it between then and when you meet her. Still, I find this case
slightly less likely than the second.
In the being trained to kill example, maybe she was supposed
to take her place as his right hand femme-fatal in his massive criminal empire
or corrupt corporate empire. It would make sense that her father would go
through the expense of adding biotics to the mix, even if it wasn’t completely
understood at the time, just to add an extra weapon she could use in a fight to
further his goals. Especially since at first people thought biotics could read
minds. It would be an invaluable edge to have in a negotiation. I find this
scenario the most likely.
As his right hand, she would need to know how to take down
shields, armor, and barriers to strike at his enemies as well as defend herself
against potential assassins. As his successor, she would have to be able to
think circles around her opponents and be able to learn and adapt quickly to
any situation. Regardless of how many sisters there were before her and
whatever stage of development they were in when they were “discarded,” to
ensure he got his money’s worth he would have started teaching her from the
time she could open her eyes.
While I don’t think he would have done anything to
physically harm her, the pressure to succeed would have been extremely high. So
instead of bed time stories, she got technical manuals. Instead of dolls and
toys, she got intelligence tests and textbooks. Instead of friends, she got
sparring partners, shooting range instructors, and tutors. All of these were
swapped out or replaced when she bested them as was expected of her.
The closest she got to constant people in her life were
probably the servant’s kids or her father’s ally’s children, which could become
her father’s enemy’s children at a moments notice. Niket was probably a
servant’s child, and only saw the opulence that her father showed to the world,
leading him to believe that she grew up with a diamond studded golden spoon in
her mouth with a few more on the side, just in case she didn’t like that one.
Niket may have been aware of the pressure on her, or she
might have started a puppy love type relationship with him (after all, he was
“safe”) and he helped her escape when she realized that her father was going to
“discard her” to start his legacy over because somehow this one failed too. So
she gets away (shots were fired), and Niket goes off and gets her a ticket to a
known Cerberus operative that can help her. Before she leaves, she snoops
around a little and finds out that her replacement is already fully developed
and waiting for her father. She goes to the lab, steals the baby, wipes the
computer data, and blows up the facility.
Then she leaves, and sets up her deal with Cerberus. They
get a fully trained super capable operative and in exchange, they find a nice
stable family to adopt a baby girl. The loss of her father’s funding is nothing
compared to the money he spent to create his legacy, so they over look the loss
of one supporter. She gets Niket to watch her father since he still lives in
the area, and sets him up as her contact.
That kind of turned into a possible origin story at the end
there, but you get my point. So… anyone think this? I’m usually wrong about
these things, but it is fun to speculate.
Also, sorry for the block of text, I tend to get very verbose.
