I have a question for you:
If Ashley and Miranda actually met, what would they think about each other? At which point? They are very different in personality and outlook, yet also have some similarities (some details in the OP). And no, I don't want to know how they would fight each other over Shepard, because I think that's silly. Just how they think about and react to each other.
I think they'd initially be very hostile, but would quickly develop a respect for each other's competence. Then somebody mentions poetry, and they start having an argument over the relative merits of Browning and Tennyson. New best friends.
Seriously, I think they'd get along fine, especially if Miranda resigned. They are driven, hypercompetent women with something to prove and who love their sisters. I think they'd recognize that.
Yes, I think Miranda resigning would be almost a prerequisite. As for poetry, I can't see Miranda liking romantic poetry much, but I don't know enough about that to make an educated guess.
*puts on English major hat* Browning and Tennyson are a bit later than the Romantics, though early Tennyson definitely shows some Romantic traits.

Didn't I say I don't know enough about that.. embarrassing, really, but you can't know everything. Anyway, this made me think about what kind of poetry Miranda might like, and I find it surprisingly hard to find anything even in my own language, which I know a little better. But after reading up a little about Browning, I must say unless I read her completely wrong, I can't imagine Miranda liking her poetry.
Edited to answer your last post:
Yes....Coleridge. I can see that.
