If I said who wrote it, that would be pretty much a giveaway - the author has completed only one epic fantasy trilogy. This book was his first, and it was published in 2003.

Indeed it is. The trilogy is named "The Prince of Nothing", the author is R Scott Bakker. I'd like to add that if you'll read only one epic fantasy trilogy after LotR, you should read this one.
