What shocks me the most with the contemporary media is the lack of modern day mythology.  Most of such entertainment is either relegated to niche markets (such as cable TV), not taken seriously, or simply derided.  That is if it is seen at all of course.

It's hard to create mythology in an age where being human increasingly seems to preclude being at the center of the universe. As a result, most stories that acquire the status of mythology seem outdated, and most stories modern enough to spin contemporary human experience into myth don't become popular.

But maybe that's not what you were talking about...
