It's hard to create mythology in an age where being human increasingly seems to preclude being at the center of the universe. As a result, most stories that acquire the status of mythology seem outdated, and most stories modern enough to spin contemporary human experience into myth don't become popular.Kabraxal wrote...
What shocks me the most with the contemporary media is the lack of modern day mythology. Most of such entertainment is either relegated to niche markets (such as cable TV), not taken seriously, or simply derided. That is if it is seen at all of course.
But maybe that's not what you wanted to say...
Edit:
Good night, Guardian.
It depends on how you view mythology I guess. Mythology for me includes using a character and setting to explore the emotional and intellectual ideals of humanity. For instance, The Fountain uses its characters and settings as a canvas for death and life. The story is as much about those ideals as it is about the characters.
Most TV shows, movies, games are less inclined to delve too deeply into such an endeavour. This isn't a knock in itself though. For every Battlestar Galactica type show that I like, I will watch shows that are not mythological in any sense of the word (NCIS, Psych, White Collar, etc). I just wish there were more shows like BSG, DS9, or any of the Whedon universes.

Maybe I have misunderstood the term 'mythology' kab, but how is a sci-fi show like BSG classed as mythology?
Mythology isn't simply gods and such. It is a form of story telling to explore moral, emotional, and intellectual ideals. BSG, the reimagined series, is a perfect example of modern day mythology. The exploration of the perils of science, religion, humanity's darker urges, and the consistent delving into the concept of souls is what makes BSG "mythology".

BSG may be sci-fi but it has an awful lot of mythological elements in it.Maviarab wrote...

And again kab, what exactly is 'modern day mythology' ? the very use of the words 'modern day' discount it from being mythology from my experience of the words meaning.
Though could be wrong....

Mythology is not constricted to one era. Stories like "The Odyssey" are not mythology simply because they are old enough. Such stories are mythology because of what they represented or for what they were constructed to do.
And BSG is a type of mythology, not just a show with elements of such.

Maybe Im being pedantic here lol, and now wanting to upset anyone, but the general areas of mythology are the Greeks, Romans, Norse and Celts?
Unless something happened in the modern day world, which was considered to be a myth, modern day mythology surely cannot exist (in the sens of the term lol)....does that make any sense? lol
It could be like the argument I was having with the idiot in the 'Golem is mispronounced' thread, just because the term 'mythology' is so generalised to have one specific meaning, does not neccessitate that said meaning is correct?

Kabraxal's idea of what mythology is follows the ideas of Joseph Campbell, who thought mythology expressed something fundamental in human psyche. Campbell's ideas have, btw, also been used by Bioware when creating Shepard's story.Maviarab wrote...

A modern myth, then, would be a story that follows these ideas while using modern concepts. For instance, science doesn't play a role in classical mythology, but it does in modern life, so any mythology that aims to express modern human experiences has to include it.

We have equated myth with legend and tales of fancy once believed true recently. But that is mostly from an attempt to differentiate between religion and mythology. Every religion today is mythology. Not becuase they are all false or some such, but simply becuase of the function religion is what mythology always was. It is a method of discussing and exploring the ideals of particular subset of people.

I would certainly read it - there's no reason not to explore alternate paths in fanfics. I like the idea.jtav wrote...
I've been thinking about what I want to do after my current story is posted and I wonder if there'd be any interest in an AU where Shepard and Miranda have known each other for several years before the game, but lost contact shortly before the events of ME. I can't get this image of Shepard staring at Miranda like she's the one who's been resurrected out of my mind.

what could I possibly say in reply to that? Let me have a think....
*On one knee*
As a cowboy from hell once told this sad story I will reiterate, for I'm broken Annjul, for just 5 minutes alone with you, I would 'walk' across the continents to reinvent hell, I would drag the waters away, and finally, shattered from my clash with reality, your domination of this love would be clear for all to see
