So far I have made little use of Shale (I have just reached Orzammar and have brought Shale along once I realised it was the dwarves that invented golems). I have a pile of points to spend and was wondering if anyone can give me some basic guidance on how to spend these points or point me at some previous threads?

All depends on what you want from Shale. One tree is for tanking, one is for damage, one is for ranged damage, and one buffs the whole group. Pick your poison. Or, more likely, pick two or three.

The buff line, bottom row, is always nice.  Otherwise pulverising blows if you wanna use him more for attacking.

If you go with the bottom line, I'd suggest comboing that with the Stoneheart line.  Both are kinda buff lines.  In the end you'll fill everything out so it's really what you wanna do first.

About the only thing I remember about Shale in Orzammar is at the Shaperate. A fair amount happens at the Anvil of the Void.

You need equal Str/Con to 38 to equip the best crystals. After that, I would go all Str. Shale is an awesome tank against the High Dragon. She can't be grabbed and with Stoneheart + small nature crystal + large fire crystal she'll need little healing. Set her to Stone Roar if the dragon attacks one of your other characters, who all do ranged attacks, and the fight becomes almost too easy. It was much more exciting using 3 melee warriors and Wynne!

I found the bottom tree to be absolutley amazing with my DW Warrior
and Sten as a two-hander. Basically it buffs damage and attack and
defense and critical chance! That is beyond amazing. Throw Leliana with her Song of Courage into the mix and you have walking dreadnoughts.

If you choose the bottome line, I would suggest buffing only constitution for a long time. Remember that Shale gets a +4 STR bonus for getting her to like you enough. Keeping that in mind means you only have to buff STR to 34 to wear the best attacking Crystal. However, some of the lower level attacking crystals have stuff like (+1 to all attributes or +2 to all attributes), and those bonuses count towards putting on new equipment (even if the equipment with the bonus is the one you're replacing). So you may only need to have Shale's base STR at something like 32 or 33. But if you're working on the bottom row only, putting points into strength is sorta a catch-22. Some of the best crystals have +X constitution, but you have to sacrafice putting points into constiution to get points into strength. So with that being said, maybe look up all the crystals to see what would be best.

Thanks for all this. I have tried her a couple of times now and she is really good fun to play.

I am on the hunt for some better crystals tho'. There doesn't seem to be any real pointers to where to find them. Is it just pot luck?

Poke around Orzammar, a lot of the vendors sell them. If you bring Shale around the Deep Roads, you'll unlock Cadash Thaig and there will be some there. I tend to save Shale till a bit later so the crystals you pick up in Wilhelm's Basement are a little higher level.

Garin in the Orzammar Commons sells them. He also upgrades his stock as you level. He usually has a random assortment of five or so crystals. If you don't like what he currently has, just leave and try him again later.

Shale's personal quest is heavy with free crystals. They are also random drops from assorted mobs.

Thanks again.

Yeah, got Shale playing good now. I had used it so little that I really did have a pile of points - can't remember exactly how many but, wow, it is powerful!

What I have done is:

Str 34
Con 38

All the bottom line
All the top line
First two of the center lines, can throw rocks - I like that :)

I have developed the warrior line so have both threaten and taunt.

I have also got the first approval bonus of strength.

I had just started off on the deep roads when the penny dropped, so I had my party setup without Shale, I have now swapped Wynne out for Shale, so my party is now:

PC - AW/SH (only taken group heal in SH)
Lel as archer
Ogrhan who is really funny - before I swapped Wynne out for Shale, the dialogue between them was so funny!
Shale

Right, looking like Sunday in the Deep Roads....

if you want crystals for free then when you are in redcliffe before the battle in the village go to the tavern and convince lloyd to help defend the village.you can then talk to bella and get some crystals for free.you get about 4-6 crystals and when you leave and go back in she has new ones.the tier also gets better.this is also an excellent way to earn money get them until your inventory is full and then sell them all

I believe that only works if you're playing on a console.

Her attack score stinks compared to everyone else so I don't think of Shale as a warrior so much as a robust carrying case for a highly versatile bag of tricks.

To that end I just top up Strength to 36 for the Brilliant Small Crystals and then everything goes into Constitution. Without knockdown and stun immunity, and with her Defence score so low, it seems to me that it's just a matter of having a big HP sink, which in any case is best for surviving spells and traps.

Her job is to supplement or provide crowd control and mage management with Hurl Rock, Earthen Grasp Regenerating Burst and Bellow. After that she can drop 100+ HP from the mob with Quake. What she does from that point on depends on your party.

If you've a melee party then you sit in Stone Aura and Not Die Because You Have Lots of HP.

If you've a ranged party then you sit in Rock Mastery and watch them minigun everything to death while you flail ineffectually but do Not Die Because You Have Lots of HP.

If you've a mage party you sit in Stoneheart and Taunt spam, drawing the mobs away so the pointy-hats can drop whichever AOE spells correspond to your crystals, and Not Die Because You Have Lots of HP.  With the best crystals and Stoneheart maxed, you're on 70% immunity, so with goodly use of Affliction Hex, the mobs will drop  before you need to chug potions, although bosses really won't. For bosses, you are simpy the aggro magnet while they DPS into it. Bear in mind Stone Aura adds a very healthy boost to Spellpower, so it's worth popping into that too.

Garin, the crazy merchant in Orzamarr is the only merchant that sells scaling crystals. If you return to him when you are level 18+ he should have brilliant crystals available. Though the choice is random he will have ~3 small & ~3 large or various sorts. If you dont' like the choice, rezone and he will refresh again...personally I like the combination of small lightning crystal w. large nature crystal...

....also after you have completed the Deep Roads / a Paragon of her kind, Shale's personal quest will become available and there are some good free crystals available here, however if you are not high enough level, you wont get brilliant crystals...

You have enough talents to take all of shales skills by the end of the game.

I liked Shale, but was disappointed in the lack of specilization development for her and Dog.

Speaking of which I plan on using Shale for an evil party play run as my tank.  Is there a mod that simply lowers the volume of his thumping noise during travel?

Thank you for all these suggestions. Very helpful indeed, and timing of them has been excellent. My Shale is now developing nicely :)
