The way Benezia tells Liara that she's always been proud of her, though, to me suggests that there was some uncertainty over what the pair of them thought of each other. If their relationship did cool because of Liara defying her and pursue her passion in the Protheans, then wouldn't their be anxiety on Liara's part that Benezia was disappointed in her? That would be the reason why Benezia reiterates how proud she is of Liara as she's dying. She'd want Liara to know that she shouldn't regret her decision to pursue archaeology, or to worry that she thinks anything bad of her.

I think she was saying that because they rarely spoke, and Benezia rarely had the chance to say how much Liara made her proud with her work on the protheans. I dont think Liara "defied" Benezia, because thats why Liara says "you share the wisdom of the matriarch". Shepard basically says "its not silly, its natural for children to forge their own path" which is exactly what Benezia said.

Im pretty sure it was other people who expected Liara to follow her mother, not Benezia herself.

Pretty amazing that after only 10 minutes or so max of ME2 content Liara, Ashley and Kaidan still have such a strong following here. That should be what counts if you ask me.

That's right...we aren't going anywhere!  We want what was promised by that Hudson feller!

The three ME1 LIs keep up with Garrus and Tali in polls and in fan support.  It makes sense for those two to have the most fans as they were fully in both games.

Liara, Ash, and Kaidan were in a game and just a hundreth of another one, and that hundreth sucked.

I always thought Benezia might have been a bit disappointed that Liara didn't follow in her footsteps (this is reasonable) but didn't disown Liara and probably supported her through schooling and her career. Their 'not talking' phase just seems unrelated to this incident, IMO.

And that, Im afraid, is why I support Tali and Garrus getting cameos in ME3. Not because I hate the characters, but I think theyve had their run as squadmates. If anyone needs to return, its Liara, the virmire survivor, and an ME2 squadmate who started in ME2. Personally I think Miranda, because shes apparantly the hardest to kill. Even then, it would either have to be a role that could be discarded if she died, or follow the Virmire Survivor pattern of introducing a secondary character who "covers" the role if she is dead, so that no matter what, someone will occupy that role, be it Miranda or this new character.

Thats the deal some people forget about the VS. It doesnt matter who it is, either Ashley or Kaidan WILL be alive in ME3, and since they now share the same role, unlike the rest they arent actually "dead".

Hmm, seems I've been confused all this time that Benezia wanted Liara to follow in her footsteps, and that Liara defied her by pursuing her career in the Protheans. Thinking about it, nowhere is that actually stated in-game. Do you think Benezia may have been saddened that Liara wasn't going to follow her, though?

I think Liara still deserves credit for her assertiveness in becoming an archaeologist and doing her own thing. She had all these expectations placed upon her, but decided that she didn't want to and went off to do what she loves. That shows her strength, and how headstrong she is.

Not only sucked, but actively tried to push fans away from them.....

Nice try, Bioware!

Also, the fact that Ash, Kai and Liara still maintain sizable and devoted fanbases, on par or even exceeding most of the ME2 cast, is testament to how great these characters are. Despite an attempt to make them as unappealing as possible in order to drive home this "rocky second chapter", they're still some of the most loved characters amongst the ME playerbase. Very heartening.

I dont think there is any doubt Benezia would have been proud if Liara had followed in her footsteps, but I think she saw it wasnt in Liaras nature, and instead was happy her daughter essentially became one of the foremost experts on the protheans in the entire galaxy - and in only a few short decades no less (which we know is why her theories were discounted by her older, more jealous peers).

Its easy to think Benezia might have disagreed (because the two are so distanced), but ironically its because Benezia was so accepting of her daughters decision that they grew apart. She let Liara follow her own path, and what with her responsibilities as a matriarch added in, they rarely had a chance to speak because of this. Yet regardless of that, and how little she had a chance to say it to Liara, she was still immensely proud of her (which is why I think she said it before she died - lack of enough chances to tell her in the past).

Very true, Dink. Also, one of the first things that Liara says when you first meet her is to emphasise that her and Benezia are very different: "I may be Benezia's daughter, but I am nothing like her!" It's merely a case of the two of them having very different personalities, and said differences leading to the drifting apart and pursuing their own interests. That doesn't mean that there's any animosity between them, on the contrary it means that Benezia loves and respects her daughter enough to allow Liara to go off and pursue her own goals and passions.

I wouldn't mind of they get a full role, as long as all other important characters get the same attention. That's what I thought ME 2 would do too. Never did I think they'd bring back some ME 1 characters as crew members, but trash the most important ones. How wrong I was... I'm really glad I decided to look into the ME 2 forums before release, I can only imagine how big the disappointment would've been had I played ME 2 fully expecting for Liara to have the full, proper role she should've had.

That would have been terrible.  I already knew the full extent of Liara's 'role' due to some spoilers released by those that got the game early, and I was still horribly disappointed with it when I played it.

I can't imagine how one who hoped Liara would be in the squad again would react to it!

I don't think any character can "have their run as a squadmate" so to speak.  When I finished ME1 I honestly thought that would have been the squad for the trilogy, give or take a few new recruits.  A character is only limited by the writer.  I loved how they progressed Tali's character in ME2.  Garrus not so much.  If any character reeked of fan service it was him because the writers didn't seem to have anything worthwhile for him.  I don't think he progressed at all.  He was put in the game just because.  Hence I wouldn't miss him if he wasn't in ME3 - which is something I wouldn't have said for any crew member after ME1.

It started when they first released the trailers for Subject Zero and Grunt...

And then week by week...

The systematic destruction of everything we loved....

Until finally it was released.

The horror!  The horror!

The disappointment was cushioned and eased somewhat for me as due to the fact that ME2 was released three days later over here, I had some aspects of Liara's role and scenes spoiled for me. That doesn't mean it didn't hurt terribly or that I wasn't horribly disappointed when I realised the full extent of Liara in ME2, and how little of her there is. I was sad, really sad.

I can't begin to imagine the disappointment felt by someone playing the game who was expecting her to be a squadmate again. That would have been terrible.
