I was thinking - when Shepard and Liara make love for the first time after ME2 - she's going to have to stop and think that this lovely smooth and toned body that's pressing against her - she's seen that as "nothing but meat and tubes"

Yeah, that might give her pause....would make for an interesting fic, to get into Liara's head during their first love scene post-Shepard's death.

Yeah, the fact that Liara actually saw Shepard as nothing more than a carcass, and a slab of meat and tubes must have affected her quite profoudly. As well as her guilt and fear, maybe this was also running through her mind when reuniting with Shepard? So many thoughts and fears eating away at her, it's no wonder she initially appears so distant. She's suffering alot, and there's alot of things happening in that blue head of hers.

While I'm not sure it was the intention of the designers, I do love the idea of Liara not quite being able to believe Shepard's alive again - hence her not really seeming that compelled to go with Shepard.

I imagine it would hit Liara later that her lover is back - she'd probably completely break down.

Something like "She died two years ago.......I saw her as a slab of meat.......and today......she kissed me...."

Jacob does ask a romanced FemShep about her feelings on the whole 'coming back from the dead after 2 years' ordeal.  I believe that is the only time Shepard gets to express an opinion on the situation, besides with Liara.

Really? What can Shepard say to Jacob? I really can't be bothered to play through his romance.

Watch this video.

She describes how she feels lonely coming back after 2 years b/c it only feels like a few weeks for her.

Add to that all the other things Liara has going on at the moment, and this could explain why she's a bit numb and cool towards Shepard.  Liara's mind is not clear, and Shepard is only adding to the 'murk' by coming back from the dead after two years.

Do you also get the impression that Liara is constantly on the cusp of opening up to Shepard, and revealing all of her emotions and opening her heart, but holds herself back due to all of the reasons we've said above? Her fear that Shepard will hate her etc.

It's only when Shepard asks the right question, when Liara displays a little emotional vulnerability (the "coffee cup" line) that Shepard is able to draw Liara out of her shell and get her to open her heart. Liara's wanted to do so throughout the entire time she's been talking to Shepard, but has witheld herself.

One thing I always got was that Liara seems so embedded in her new "persona" that even Shepard isn't enough to instantly bring her out of it. I'd imagine that if she spent some more time with Shepard - perhaps a couple of days - then we'd see the Liara we know from ME1

Why couldn't they have done that w/ Garrus? Would have made more sense and been a much better experience.

EDIT: Maybe something like this w/ Liara in ME3?  Naaaaah.  More likely to get more personal w/ Grunt.  :pinched:

Thanks for the link, everyone. Of course once again we can't choose what to say. So much for "our" Shepard. <_< In any case, that stuff can't be hidden in one single romance, that absolutely needed to be a central part of Shepard's story.

Now exactly why couldn't that have been showcased in dialogue with any other LI who isn't...you know...terminally dull?

To be honest I think we are taking too complex and "human" of a look at this.  Sometimes the simple answer is the one that is true.  I still hold to the notion, for better or worse, than Bioware is likely to take the well-tread path of "dark turn" with Liara as no other character has that in ME, unless you count Garrus but even then you can convince him to be overwhelmingly Paragon again.

I know how you feel. Whilst playing ME1 the other day, I felt incredibly sad and a little depressed when I heard Benezia threaten Shepard by saying "Have you faced an asari commando unit before? Few humans have." Makes you think of Liara's predicament in ME2, and what happens to her.

Particularly as Liara's right there, confused and upset at what is happening to her mother.

Wow, well since I havent done any of the ME2 romances (all my ported sheps are in relationships) I had no idea shep got to vent alittle....damn, why couldnt I get drunk enough in that game to the point where Shep should stagger around the SR2 and just go haywire on everyone. That would have been fun :)

See, this is what I don't understand. Liara gets all this flak and mud thrown at her, and Garrus seemingly comes off scot free.

Liara is working as an information broker, hating what she's doing but doing it because she sees it as a necessity and is seemingly limiting the bloodshed.

Garrus is killing people indiscriminately based upon his own perception as to whether they're "bad" people, and actually believes that he is "righteous" in killing these people, all of which is based on his own judgement.

And Liara is the one that has supposedly lost the plot?

Don't be completely unprepared for it, MDK.

Remember Aribeth, and Bastila? I don't think they're going to do it with Liara, and it wouldn't be logical for her character, but they'll pull anything out of nowhere.

It's extremely unlikely though, IMO.

I agree it's extremely unlikely, but still.....

Part of me actually thinks that if it turns out she really is properly and genuinely "dark" for good - I'd just put the controller down and give up.

I'm not a weirdo that's THAT obsessed with a single character - I just don't want to think Bioware would butcher one of their own creations so much.

Nah, I'm the same. If they flub up Liara's character completely, it's not a case of moving on to a new LI and growing attached to other characters. I'll just switch off the console and be done with Mass Effect. I'd then go and play Metal Gear or Zelda or something, but would still be extremely pissed off over what happened.
