Now all thats left is for a few others to be the bigger man/woman and realise that the slightest bit of heated discussion wont cause the thread to implode or get deleted.....

Okay questions:
  • When asari do the "embrace eternity" mind meld, how much access do they get to the other person's thoughts/memories? Can they control it? Is Liara going to magically know about the puppy Shep had when she was seven?
  • What about mating? I've read some fic where an asari and her partner can hardly tell where one person ends and the other begins.
  • Would Liara's degree of devotion to Shepard be seen as strange to other asari? She's not what I would call philosophical about the union.
  • How do you think Liara would react to Shepard making a deal with Cerberus to bring his ME2 LI (Tali in this case) back from the dead w/ Lazarus Project 2.0? For that matter, how would she react to him having moved on to Tali at all if he romanced Liara in the first game?

Don't know, don't care. Never going to happen as far as I'm concerned.

jtav:

- Liara says that the asari explore their partner's individual and racial indentities, and that their minds truly become one. I think that means that Liara does have all of Shepard's memories now, as she does say that when an asari melds with her partner they take a small part of them and keep them inside of themselves. If Liara is your LI, then a part of Shepard lives inside Liara now. They became one, their minds united into a single whole. Everything that Shepard experienced, Liara would know of it. That's my take.

- I'm not entirely sure. Again, Liara does say that their minds become a single whole, that an asari and her partner become a single entity. It's possible that they lose their own sense of self whilst in the depths of the meld, as their minds become one.

- Liara is very atypical of other asari, and doesn't take the asari "long view" with regards to the death of her partner. I think the asari would think that was somewhat bizarre.

I'll answer the last question a little later, I have to go.

Answers (mine at least):

  • I don't think the asari can see everything at once.  They must have some control, though, as Liara was able to dig into Shep's psyche and view the Prothean beacon data.  I imagine the partner has some control over what is shown, as well, and can close off parts if desired.   They are both probably too focused on the moment to worry about digging around too much.
  • As for mating, I think Liara herself alludes to the fact that, during the melding, you cannot tell were you end and your partner begins.  She says, 'two become one, thoughts, memories and emotions intertwine into a single, rapturous whole'.
  • I don't think so...asari seem pretty devoted to their bondmates (remembering that asari with the locket on Illium).  On the otherhand, Liara and Shepard weren't technically bondmates, so perhaps other asari would think it odd.  Plus, Liara might not have romanced Shepard at all.    The whole, 'Liara saving Shep's body and giving it to Cerberus' could be just seen as a noble, friendly act....a chance to give your Commander's body a place to rest.  I think other asari wouldn't think any lesser of her for this.
  • I don't think Liara would blame Shepard in either case, since she did the first one.  As for the second, I feel that Liara expects Shepard to move on with another, as she is very guilty and believes Shepard will hate her for what she did with the body.  She would be upset about Shepard moving on, but she would keep this to herself and wouldn't hold a grudge against him or Tali.

[*]All of your answers are excellent, J, but I have a couple of points I'd like to make regarding this answer. Liara seems very atypical of other asari with regards to her saying that she "couldn't let Shepard go." She doesn't adopt the philosophical asari long-view, and tasks herself with hunting down Shepard's body. Then, after she has recovered the corpse, she proceeds to hand it over to Cerberus because she wants to see Shepard revived, something that causes tremendous guilt and induces alot of self-loathing in Liara. She's willing to hand over Shepard's corpse to a hated organisation, and risk having Shepard hate her, all because she wants to see Shepard alive and well again. To me, this shows incredible devotion to Shepard, far greater than what the asari normally show as after their partner dies they adopt the long view, and do not spend time grieving over them. Liara's different, she actively hunts down Shepard's corpse, then hands it over to Cerberus, causing herself tremendous pain in the process all because she can't let go. She's willing to risk so much all to bring Shepard back to life. That's very atypical of the asari, and I think they would find her devotion to Shepard unusual.

Thank you so much jib and LET. You've been a tremendous help. And bjdbwea, Shepard isn't exactly a prize in this story: he sacrifices every principle he has for the chance of bringing Tali back. Liara's better off without him.

I occasionally post rough draft excerpts on threads as I work. Would you guys be interested in me doing the same here, with the understanding that the story is Liara/Miranda and Shepard is her ex for good reason in this story?

If Liara becomes a Matriarch, and an influential one, maybe the human influence from Shepard that rubbed off of on her will help her in convincing the Asari to faster about progress and making decisions.  Matriarch Aethyta can be there, too, lending support from afar, since she got laughed out of the place for saying the exact same things.

The "long-view"  is a nice concept for Asari, but it seems a little dated, now that the Asari are interacting with non-Asari.

Yeah, that'd be fine. I'd be very interested in reading your fanfic.

Hey, if Shepard is treating Liara like dirt, then he doesn't deserve her.

Is jtav's Shepard Renegade? He seems paragon, but is only going against that ideal to bring Tali back.
