As far as we have been able to tell, 360 users get the smile, PC don't.. it could also be the male/female Shep thing too... But so far everyone sayign they see the smile are playing on 360, I believe.

This video is from a the 360 version, and she doesn't give Shepard the same smile.

So, maybe it's the gender thing. But why would they do that?

Just another oddity, no doubt resulting from their botching of the scene. Just like she seems to whisper something to a female Shepard before the kiss.

question do you get an email from Liara if you had her as LI? like you do from kaiden/Ash?

Actually, as I've played through both, Liara's animations in ME1 when you speak to her vary depending upon Shepard's gender as well. It's not just limited to ME2, this also existed in ME1. I can't think of any reason as to why they'd alter Liara's animations depending on whether Shepard was either male or female. Perhaps they just wanted to vary it so that each of them feels like a somewhat unique romance? IDK.

You're going to be disappointed, my friend. Here is the full extent of unique content if you romanced Liara in ME1:

-Liara appears during the intro, as the Normandy comes under attack from the Collectors.
-A kiss from Liara upon reuniting with her on Illium.
-The scene in which Shepard stares at Liara's photograph before travelling through the Omega 4 relay, dependant upon not romancing any ME2 LI.
-Kasumi mentioning the romance with Liara.

That's all. That is the full extent of content in ME2 that only appears if Liara is your LI.

You forgot...she gives you 500 more credits for completing the observer quest if you've romanced her.

It's true, kraidy. If you didn't romance Liara in ME1, you receive 4500 credits for completing the Observer sidequest. However, if Liara is your LI, then you receive 5000 credits.

You guys really did get ripped off. What's especially apalling is the lack of some really obvious dialogue choices during the reunion. Grr.

Too true! We've all pretty much reached a consensus that this emoticon epitomises Shepard's reactions during the Liara reunion scenes:

They wanted us to cheat, remember? Even if it needed obvious bad writing.

I don't think it's so much as that they wanted us to cheat on Ashley, Kaidan or Liara. It's just that they were trying to push this whole "rocky second chapter" of the romance idea, and in a way make Ash, Kai and Liara as unappealing as possible in ME2. If that means that they have neglect to include some really obvious dialogue choices on Shepard's behalf, then that's what they'll do.

They made the ME1 LI's unappealing as possible so people would cheat on em. I believe Casey hudson said that  in a pre-ME2 interview.

And they did a great job at it! <_<

That's the thing, it's like they set out the rough draft of the outline as "Rocky second chapter", and they let the fleshing out go until they were almost done.  Though I'll give them the credit of putting 'rocky second chapter' in only after they realized they wanted, somehow, to keep the LIs off the table for the suicide mission.  I may be too nice, though.

Seriously, I swear, Casey promised us 'characters so compelling that (he) feel(s) that nearly everyone will cheat on their ME1 LIs', and that was such a half-truth ... as much as I'm jealous of the Mirandamancers -- do they have a name? -- particularly after her loyalty mission, I don't see many maleSheps leaving Liara or Ashley for her without taking into account their emotional distance in the second game.

This is a device too used today, if the plot needs characters acting in a way they wouldn´t then maybe that story shouldn´t be told. I´ve dropped most comics I read because of it.
I think Bioware went with the cheat angle from an interview with a deb saying how he believed most players would move to the new LIs because of how interesting they were. That and the ME1 characterization doesn´t look coincidence. With Liara it also seems a set up for a What the hell hero moment in ME3, don´t think the dialog wheel is bugged.

Mirimainiacs. Hate the nickname myself. And some of us do prefer Miranda without regard to how Ash/Kaidain/Liara behaved in ME2.

I think it was a combination rush job and limited resources. There were several places where I thought dialogue was lacking, most notably when talking to TIM.

I think it's more because they wanted to solve the "three games romance" problem. Example, Say you romanced Liara/Kaidan/Ash in ME1. What happens then? Well, the romance continues, right? Well, what about people who bought ME2, but never played ME1? How do you design that? Allow them to be romanced in ME2?

Ok, well then lets continue.

Say little Timmy buys ME3, and never played ME2. Do you have them as a romance option again?

You see, it starts to get way too complicated then it should. So they designed it like this:

Romance someone in ME1. Romance is then broken up in ME2. Romance re-established in ME3, or started in ME3 if you didn't romance any of them.
