I also think that Liara breaks away from the kiss, and is somewhat distant afterwards, because of the fear that Shepard will hate her. Just look at that incredibly sad, pained and distant stare Liara has on her face after she turns her head away. It's very poignant.

But..... Shepard is kissing her!  Shouldn't that be a big clue that she doesn't hate her?
God dang it.... that scene is so broken.

Maybe she thought Shepard was just being polite by kissing her back?

No, it's kissing someone you had deep feelings for, but at the same time, it's been 2 years of being single because he/she's been dead. It's just plain messed up. You're also kissing a corpse, technically.

Anyways, say what you want, but that kiss is probably the most emotion thing in a video game. She kisses you, but for whatever the reason, she pulls back with a look that says "this is wrong."

This is probably why Liara is one of the most interesting of the romances. It's complex and tragic.

Since they announced a Mass Effect movie being in the works, what certain actresses do you people think would be good for Liara? For me, I can't think of anyone one, but one thing's for sure, is that when the movie comes out eventually, IF it comes out, I'll like it even more if there's romance with Shepard and Liara. Plus, I would predict having the asari in the movie appear the same with the actresses appearring with blue make up all over, and head mold design of their head fringe.

Ali Hillis is Liara, and should continue to be Liara.
Image IPB

However, the movie should be events prior to the game series and should not include any of the current chartacters other than the antagonists and how they got that way. I don't want to see a ME movie with any current characters, including Liara. Benezia, yes since she ended up being an antagonist, but there should be no story dedicated to Liara there.

Or the woman she was modeled after? Jillian Murray
Image IPB

Waaaayyyy hotter AND younger as Liara is supposed to be. I think having Liara's voice right would be cool and all, but not at the expense of the actress really looking nothing like her.

I actually theorise that the reason that dialogue path is so easy to miss is because we're actually not supposed to find it. It's also why I think Shepard acts as emotionless as a heap of bricks when Liara opens her heart. We're not supposed to be able to properly comfort Liara, or for her to reveal her guilt and fear. The status quo has to be maintained for the Liara DLC, where the romance and Liara's emotional pain will be handled. They need Liara to still fear Shepard hates her and to be emotionally tormented. That can't be the case if we can properly console her, and ease her pain.

They had to put that dialogue path in there somewhere, though. Otherwise, it would seem like Liara is giving Shepard the cold shoulder completely, when that's not the case. It's there, but we're not supposed to find it. It's difficult to explain.

Liara means that she's afraid Shepard will hate her when she eventually finds out that she was the one to hand the body over to Cerberus. If that's playing on Liara's mind, and the fear and self-loathing is eating away at her, then she's going to be incredibly fearful and a little distant.

Alot of people seem to miss the fact that it's Liara that instigates the kiss, not Shepard. She was glad to see Shepard, and eager to rush up and kiss her. But her fear and pain suddenly bubbled to the surface again, and she breaks it off.

this is what I think as well also this becomes somewhat clear after you talk to her from helping her with her side missions. To any point no one can really be sure until ME3 unfolds. I without a doubt agree the reason is how Les explains. There is a lot more to it than just this, but this topic has already been introduced in the thread a while back and several ppl went into detail about it that explained it perfectly in my opnion. ^_^

ME2 was so lonely without Liara...or any other romance(for those coming from ME1).

All my character had for comfort was a picture of her little blue friend. :(

I see what you are saying.  The kiss is emotional, very much so, I just wonder why Liara doesn't close her eyes at any point during the kiss, not even the beginning?  She closes her eyes when she hugs Shepard.

I agree it's hidden for a reason, but I think it's more done so us Shepard's will hate her. Not her motives. After all, if she didn't want us to hate her, i don't think she would have said "Say's the dead Spectre who's now working for Cerberus" after telling her to be carefully (this line also ended my relationship with her on my first playthrough).

Anyways, there's a million reasons for why she could have did what she did. Only time will tell.

There's extra depth and an added dynamic if Liara is romanced by Shepard, regarding her guilt and anguish, and fear Shepard will hate her. This emotional torment runs on a much deeper level if she is Shepard's lover.

This manifests itself as Liara being even more afraid to be properly intimate, and wary of Shepard's true thoughts of her. That's the way I see it, anyway.

Really? You got pissed at her for saying that? It was an example of Liara's dry and witty sense of humour. Her smile should have made that obvious.

I guess it would have made more sense if she started with her eyes closed (getting lost in the moment) and then opened them up mid-kiss.  Or does she?  *looks at vid again*

Definitely. I think they could have directed that a little better. Perhaps it would have been a little too obvious, though? People would have worked it out before Liara eventually opens up and reveals just what is really going on?

This is how it went:

Shepard walks in.

Shepard: Liara! Are you alright?

Liara: Yes, I killed my secretary. Thanks for helping.

Pause.

Shepard: Ok... umm... glad I helped you out with that. Kind of freaked me out seeing KILL KILL KILL as the only options, but thank god I solved that one in the end. And it was your secretary! Damn... You alright?

Liara: I'm now have her data. It's going to take a while to look threw it.

Pause.

Shepard: Be careful, Liara. Don't become the thing you're looking for.

Liara: Says the dead Spectre who's now working for Cerberus.

Shepard: <_<

Tries to talk to her again.

Shepard: How's your own working going?

Liara: I'm going to one day kill the Shadow Broker.

The end.

Actaully, it's different sometimes. I've seen her smile, and I've seen her not smile.

Ah right, so you didn't get the "Because I couldn't let you go" dialogue path back then?

I suppose you could misconstrue Liara's joke and see it in something of a negative light if you didn't get the dialogue from Liara beforehand.

exactly if you missed this its a one time chance to hear her say this... and you have to go into investigate and choose the lower left option after you finished her missions

So the thread has been moved, along with all others. Out of the spotlight, so to speak. Hmm, does that tell us anything about the importance of the characters, I wonder...?

Yeah, I didn't get it. I found it on Youtube. That's how I learned of that scene. My reaction to that was "WHAT???? WHY THE HELL DIDN'T SHE SAY THAT TO ME!?!?!?!"

I hope not...I think they are just trying to organize things more efficiently.
