Just thought I would add this post to show one of many way's to get Shepard working for Cerberus without the contrived death and resurrection. I think its a much more realistic way to get Bioware's favorite little pet into the game. Granted it does not go over all the possible dialog option's for Shep, its just an example.
Why did Shepard even need to die? The same story could have been easily accomplished and made more sense they way you just explained it.
Why would the Collectors suddenly single out the Normandy SR1 in the middle of space and destroy it?
I agree, BioWare was definitely trying to go with the "amped up" second chapter, but they missed the whole point of ME1 by a long shot.
Also, why does Cerberus have more advanced technology then any other organization and military in the entire galaxy? It makes no sense.
Well, I guess that is what happens when you try to make a stand alone game in a trilogy.
The actual phrase "stand alone game in a trilogy" is starting to become a paradox.

I don't post often as I prefer to lurk and enjoy the discussion here. But after reading this, and then comparing it to what actually happened in the game has just made me beyond depressed.
My God, Bioware, what were you thinking?

Gah, too much angst in here. This thread need more Liara.

Seriously, four conversations, some of which would benefit from additional animation just as much as 'Because I couldn't let you go' could, and we love everything about her.
Credit has to go to Ali Hillis, and whoever was the VA director in the first one, for nailing the delivery, for making her so utterly believable. (And tell you the truth, her lines in ME2 are practically perfect for who she's supposed to be. A lesser actress would have totally muffed the transition from "... with my mind. -- Shepard!" Scary woman to 'glad to see you -- I hope?' in one word!
Also, I do hope that we're not piling any of the blame on Jen or Mark for the "I couldn't let you go" scene. Although Jen was a bit more, how do you say, relaxed in her delivery this game, you can't screw up a line you don't have.
THIS is what I'd like for the unused Paragon choice there:
WHEEL NAME: <hug her>
Liara: Because I couldn't let you go... I ... I'm sorry.
(She'd still be standing looking out the window, which I think would've worked for all of the options anyway.)
<<Shepard goes over to her and hugs her from behind, around the waist, and whispers into her ear:>>
SHEP: "I'm sorry you had to do that, too... what you've been through, I can't even imagine..."
Liara: (Possibly a quieter rendition of) "Thank you, I ... I was afraid you'd hate me for it."
SHEP: (Still whispering) "I could never hate you, Liara, remember that."
And possibly they go back to the desk, and the same dialogue options come up, but Shep can say after Don't become ..." or "Good luck..." something like "When this is over... I'd like my Liara back" -- all in the nuance of course -- and Liara can say, "When this is all over... you can help me find her again."

Is it just me or is Liara kinda like the idiotic guy that a girl falls in love with (or switch that a bit for same sex)? it seems like Shep is the one that smacks her up side the head to get her to realize things because she's awkward. it usually seems like it is the other way around.....
I think its charming....
Did you just call Liara "idiotic"?

You're about to make Liara sad.

Shepard doesn't appreciate that.

Seriously though, yeah it is kinda charming.

Okay, I'll stop with the pictures. Was just going through some screenshots I've taken in my new ME1 play through.

Hey, they've probably got to get Ali, Jen and Mark in there for the planned DLC anyway, why not do two more lines anyway? And the hug, that's the animators' job anyway, and after the ... rather interesting re-animations I've seen on the Dragon Age Nexus, I'm starting to think this animation thing isn't too hard to do. So they may as well.
