I choose poor writing!  Mac Walters should be working at Burger King!

Wait which part of the writing did he handle?
Because I'm pretty sure he wasn't the only writer.

Liara and Shepard both came down with a terrible disease known as maciuswalterous, a debilitating and potential fatale disease.

I choose poor writing/design. There were several occasions where some really obvious options were not available. My guess is time constraints rather than incompetence or indifference. ME2 had excellent writing in places, so I know Walters is capable of excellent work.

I hear it's very catchy and related to grandiosity

I don't think he put much thought into the Liara piece, tbh.  It wasn't one of their top priorities for ME2 and it shows.

No, I don't feel betrayed by a fictional character.

I feel betrayed by the writers and whoever thought this was the direction to go.

This.

Or it wasn't "his" character, and he purposely did a crap job to turn the fans against her.
Kinda like how male lions will kill the cubs fathered by other males.

I doubt it. Where in ME 2 was the writing really good? Not in the main story, that's for sure. Mordin stands out, and of course many people like the Tali stuff. But apart from that? Kelly was well done, apart from the ridiculous ending. The (few) conversations with crew members on board the Normandy were okay. But that's pretty much it. Everything else was functional at best, and repeatedly even that would be too much praise.

The piece was likely written and it included the Shadow Broker stuff that was found in hidden files and then it was decided not to include SB stuff either because of the comic or a decision to include it at a later date with more depth and this likely occurred close to production so instead of rewriting the entire piece it was just chopped up to save time. Maybe they'll make up for it

You do get the impression that Liara's ME2 scenes have been cut and recreated many times, and consequently it feels a little incomplete and slapped together.

That's my theory. Like I said, there's too much in ME2 that's top-notch (the new team, the loyalty missions, the deeper looks into asari and krogan culture) for me to believe anyone on the team is a hack.

Too focused on shooter stuff and explosions and not enough on story, dialogue and character development. They could have done a much better job with that. You'd think they'd want to since those elements were what made the first game so great

By the way, I'm really pleased to hear that you're continuing your Liara/Miranda fic, jtav. I thought the first chapter was very well written. Looking forward to reading more!

I second that.

Wonder if the writing staff reads fan fiction. A lot of great ideas there.

Well, yes and no. Yes, the story had to take the back seat, unfortunately. However, less quantity doesn't have to mean lower quality too. The Liara scene is the perfect example: We knew before she would just have a small side role. But that doesn't mean it had to be as badly written as it is. Even a short scene can be well written, can be memorable.

The same is true for the game as a whole. Just because you want to have more action and less talking, doesn't mean the writing has to be so bland and unimaginative - or in those cases where it is imaginative, so dumb and laughable like the whole  "human reaper" thing.

Maybe. I haven't really decided if I really want to or if my plot works, and am trying to work up the nerve to do a Miranda/Thane story. (I ship Miranda/almost anyone but Shepard).
