There will be no conflict. At the beginning of the game there will be some plot contrivance so that Shepard will be far away from their LI and will have a new crew and potential LIs. At the end of ME3, if Shepard didn't pick a new LI in ME3, the old active LI will have a small epilogue (10 second shot) showing them happy together.

Cut. End scene. End game. No effort required on BioWare's part. No complex tracking required. Put in shops. Make money. Laugh at a jilted fans. Make next game.

And I thought I was cynic...;). The point you make about the beginning of the game is quite valid on other areas though, with levels, skills and equipment. Repeating the same trick twice would be really bad.

I've got quite a big surprise coming for you guys....

While I wait for it to upload, here's a couple of nice shots I got of Liara with Freya. I haven't seen pics of these angles posted yet.

Great!

You can definitely see how much more taller Liara is in ME2 than Shepard in that shot.

Okay, here's the big surprise for you guys. Please be gentle - it's still very much in the early stages and this is a segment from somewhere in the middle...

Oooh, great work MDK! Looking forward to seeing the finished version. Interested as to how you're going to flesh out a Shepard/Liara ME2 trailer, considering there's little to work with in-game in terms of interaction between the two.

Yeah, there really is nothing to work with. So I'm having to edit various dialogue and shots to create the impression that the game has more to do with them.

Kinda like making it look like Shepard is fighting for Liara or something...

And the entire opening minute of the trailer features them - and you'll even get to see a glimpse of ME1 Freya.

Flashbacks to their relationship during the events of ME1? Could be very poignant and moving. Can't wait to see it!

Pretty much.

It features snippets of dialogue from their meeting right up until the pre-Ilos scene, and then throws the viewer into the Normandy attack

Ah, I think that structure will be highly effective at having an emotional impact on the viewer. Just as they believe they're going to view the passionate and loving climax and culmination of Shepard and Liara's deepening and strengthening relationship, they're suddenly thrown into the attack on the Normandy. Could be very jarring, and work to unsettle the viewer on an emotional level somewhat.

I've put quite a lot of time into the audio editing to get it right.

So as Shepard and Liara embrace and kiss, the sounds of the explosions and alarms start to creep in.

Almost as if the Normandy was attacked during the romance scene.

Wow, you're an optimist. The epilogues in recent BioWare games were text boxes. The text in which grew ever shorter since BG 2, probably a concession to the people who can't stand "walls of text". Resulting in DA, where the LI is worth two or three - ridiculously vague - sentences. So a ten second scene showing Shepard and his/her LI happily together would actually be an improvement in that regard.

I think, at worst, "cheaters" should be stuck wit their ME2 LI. If both LIs leave you, then you're being punished for preferring your ME2 choice. That's bad.

Well, I have 2 theories, and both have to do with the idea that both the Ash/Kaidan and Liara will be squadmates.

Here's one:

Considering Commander Shepard is famous, most likely his/her new romance is already on news. So when you recruit Ash/Kaidan and Liara, they already know. For people that didn't cheat, they'll still act a little hostile towards you (with Ash, it's because you might be a traitor, and with Liara it's because she wants to continue her hunt for the Shadow Broker, and you're in the way), but there will be some added lines. After doing some missions, they'll start to break down. Here's where things get split.

If you didn't cheat, they asked if you've moved on, and you say you haven't. They'll be surprised, considering the amount of time that has gone by. Then they'll ask if you still have feelings for them, and then bam, the romance begins.

For those that cheated, they'll say they heard you moved on, and that they're happy for you, but still sad. You then have the option ask them to stop, and be a romance again, in which a fight starts. Two things will happen. Either A) They say they can't, and walk away. Or B) You talk them into it, but you ME2 LI finds out, and leaves the ship, and never comes back (goes with the dead scenario.)

Don't think it'll realistically be anything as elaborate as that, TMA. It'll be a generic "confrontation" scene in which you have to choose between the LIs, and the one you reject will stop talking to you whilst the other resumes the romance. That'll be it.

Having said that, a part of me does hope that cheating on Liara leads to her being unavailable for romance in ME3. That specific player has blown it with Liara, betrayed her and trashed her. Why should the player get a second chance, considering that Liara would have been put through the emotional wringer by Shepard?

This is an older version of the first two minutes of my trailer...

The sound mix has since recieved a lot more work, and some shots have been changed or re-edited.

Sidenote - the CGI planets at the start are entirely done by me :)

I agree, give the LIs some self-esteem and not just going after Shephard. It would also be karmic justice for some players.

You say that, but relationships are about things breaking, coming back together, or breaking apart for good. Like divorced couples coming back together. You say they trashed her, but I've seen relationships die for her doing exactly what she's been doing. They don't all cheat, but they do walk on with everything they have, because they're ignored, and treated like they don't exist. And all because someone whats to keep working. So don't even say it's all the player's fault, and Liara's all innocent. Also, it's not cheating considering they probably don't even know if they're even still "together".

However, a romance is a romance. People come together, then start to hurt each other bad. They then see other people, and things go well, but deep down, they both know they screwed up. Thus, sometimes people come back together.

That would be fine by me, LET. By romancing someone in ME2, you're saying that you prefer them to your ME LI (or in my case, are curious if the Talimance lives up to the hype. My gut says I'll like Liara). I don't think players should be locked out of their ME2 LI because they also had one in ME.

That's your subjective view of the status of Liara's romance in ME2, however. I happen to interpret it very differently, and consequently feel that if Shepard does trash her then she should be appropriately punished. The relationship may be a little strained and difficult at the moment, but in no way does that justify running off and sleeping with someone else.

I doubt you will be prevented from keeping your ME2 LI over the ME1 one, and vice versa. That would go against the 'big choices' spiel, and it just doesn't make sense. You'll pick one or the other and if there are new LIs, perhaps you will get a 'I don't want none of you losers!' option so you can woo one of the new people.

I just don't like the idea of having the ability to butter Liara up again by having a sufficiently high enough Paragon or Renegade score. Cheapens the romance somewhat.

It doesn't matter for you as you'll never see the potential 'fight' scene.  :P
