To be honest, Kaidan and Carth never struck me as being very similar. They have the same voice actor, and that's about it.

I don't think that Shepard really had a choice in the matter. He/She was dead for 2 years and trying to save the Galaxy from the Reaper/Collector threat for the rest.

I agree.  I was like the first time I saw that scene.  I hope for more of that in the future, actually!  Liara needs to open up!

A lot of people never liked Carth because he wouldn't stop talking about Saul and how he betrayed him, killed his family, destroyed his homeworld, etc. They called him a whiner. Bioware made a pretty funny reference to this in ME1, when you talk to Kaidan and he says something like "I don't want you to think of me as a whiner" right after he got done talking about his past.

Yeah, even fem-shep tells him that he should talk more, and talking doesn't make him a whiner. And then Kaidan laughs, and says he's sorry Shepard had to be one to tell him that.
